Dinobots’ triumphant return!

“Me, Grimlock!”

That T-Rex shaped Transformer and his pals are back in a new video game and fans say it's about time.

The Transformers are reaching back into their “prehistoric” past and bringing the Dinobots – Autobots in dinosaur form – to their next video game. Grimlock, Slag, Sludge, Snarl and Swoop are returning in the new “Transformers: Fall of Cybertron."

The group of dinosaur-shaped robots hasn’t been around for many years, only making small appearances in comic books after being prominent in the Transformer cartoon series in the mid-1980s. They were the first mini-team in the Transformers universe, and their shape and rugged attitude made them enjoyable for kids.

Ryan Yzquierdo, a self-proclaimed Transformers guru, has been a fan of the “Robots in Disguise” since the cartoon. He runs a website featuring galleries of Transformer toys, most of which (nearly 4,000) he currently owns. He says it was hard not to be a fan of the Dinobots.

“If you were a fan in the '80s, you knew who Grimlock was,” he said. “He is every bit of a character as some of the frontrunners like Optimus, Megatron, Starscream or Bumblebee. He’s right there at the top of one of the best Transformers of all time.

“Transforming dinosaurs into bad-ass robots. They’re like the 'Punishers' of the universe. They’re pretty tough guys and they do what they’ve got to get things done."

Jerry Jivoin, Hasbro’s marketing director for the Transformers, said it was an easy decision to bring back the Dinobots for a new generation of fans. The Dinobots are an emotional touch point with Transformers fans, Jivoin said, and prominent at Transformers conventions in the United States (BotCon) and Singapore (Cybertron Con).

“The Dinobots have always been a very popular part of the Transformers lore,” he said. “They are fan favorites and an important part in the history of the Transformers.”

Fast forward to today, and one of those young fans, Matt Tieger, game director for “Transformers: Fall of Cybertron,” jumped at the opportunity to retell the origins of the Dinobots and use the “cool, dynamic characters” in a new way.

“It was a eureka moment of  'We have the opportunity to bring in beloved characters and do some really creative story things,'” Tieger said. “The five core Dinobots are in the game and we wanted to tell a mature and logical origin story.”

Tieger wouldn’t say how their past would change, but he did say the core elements of each of the Dinobots would remain.

The 1980s TV show said they were created by an Autobot who found dinosaur bones and thought they were cool. The Dinobots existed in a unique category: They were the only creatures in the Transformers universe who were created on Earth, rather than Cybertron.  The modern origin story will also be reflected in future lore in the Transformers universe.

But, Tieger said, they will look different than in the 1980s.

“It was a real opportunity for us to reinvigorate thinking about dinosaurs, and by extension, make it very relevant to kids,” Tieger said. “The way we designed Grimlock, the way he looks, is very appealing to kids and very nostalgic to gamers who remember (Generation 1).”

Yzquierdo, who has been keeping an eye on game trailer releases, is happy with the new look and how the designers were aware of what makes each Dinobot special.

“It really makes them stand out, transforms them to modern characters,” Yzquierdo said. “There is an acknowledgement for what’s gone on in years past, but the game retrofits them into this continuity. It’s nice to see they’ve figured it out.”

Yzquierdo thinks the game will definitely appeal to the older fans, but act as a great avenue to introduce new fans to the same emotions he has about the Dinobots.

“I’m really hoping that interest in these characters and making them so key in this game, the younger generation will play this game and I hope they will have the opportunity to make the same connection with these characters and see how awesome they are.”

Gregg Berger can vouch for that. Berger voiced Grimlock for the television series in the mid-1980s and again voices the Tyrannosaurus Rex bot in the video game,

Berger has been around the world to meet hundreds of thousands of fans who have been loyal to the Dinobot characters and the Transformers franchise. He says he is always amazed and humbled by the people who still flock to Grimlock and his teammates.

“There was a pure rage-driven aggressive side coupled with almost a childlike, simple understanding of that world and (Grimlock’s) place in it,” Berger said. “There is something about dinosaurs, and power, and the Transformers’ lore and story-driven characters. I have very loyal fans and fan base, and I try to be equally loyal to them.”

Grimlock is noble, with sense of purpose that crosses generations, Berger said . He recently met a group of fifth-grade students who said they discovered the original cartoon series and told him how much they loved Grimlock.

Tieger said they are trying to tap into those fan feelings with the new origin story and new look. But he wants Grimlock to be Grimlock.

“(Grimlock) is a good guy through and through, so he’s an Autobot,” he said. “But he does not always agree with Optimus Prime.

"There’s some interesting conflict that happens between the two of them, story-wise. It’s great to see Optimus from a different perspective.”

While fans pushed hard for the Dinobots inclusion in the Transformers movies, it never happened; Tieger said they will be very happy to get to play as Grimlock.

“Where the game starts is just going to blow you away and fulfill fantasies you’ve had from 20 years ago.”

Megatron is the founder of the Decepticon uprising and their most feared leader. Bob Budiansky, the writer for the Marvel Comics series, stated that originally Hasbro took issue with the name, saying it sounded too frightening. Budiansky responded that as the lead villain, that was the point. Hasbro later agreed with his reasoning, and approved the name "Megatron".;-..,

The next TF video game will have Megatron creating an especially fiendish line of bots called the Republicons. Individual bots will join together to create the ultimate bot of destruction the Romnicon!

I'm not a big fan of TF video games, however, with that being said I'm extremely excited to hear the Dinobots are coming back. I will definitely buy the game. I loved the dinobots. As a kid I think i had every one.

Too bad the Dinobots were not incorporated into the movies, I guess it would have been to easy for the autobots to defeat the decptacons. As i remember in the animated series the deceptacons had no answer for the Dinobots and they continually got there asses kicked when they went up against them.....

"They were the only creatures in the Transformers universe who were created on Earth, rather than Cybertron"

They forgot the construct-icons, Although they changed the 'origin' in the cartoon, they were first construction equipment before Megatron turned them into Robots (although they did take them to Cybertron to give them life, and i thought it was at the same time as the Dinobots) Later, the construct-icons origin changed and became the rival of OmegaPrime (i believe) – they were friends once but they betrayed Omega when they joined Megatron.

Maybe I don't remember correctly, or am confusing it with the comics, but didn't the Dinobots come to existence after the Ark built them? It sent out a probe to see what the prominent life form on the planet was and created the Dinobots in that image. I don't remember an autobot digging up bones and thinking they were cool, then building the Dinobots...

    June 24, 2012 at 12:44 pm |
    • lyrker

"didn't the Dinobots come to existence after the Ark built them?"

No. Ratchet built them based on info he found about Earth's history. The Dinobots were never made by the Ark/Teletran 1 – in the comics or the show. It only made Transformers look like "modern metal life forms" (tape deck, car, plane, etc.).

This is correct for the cartoon except it was Wheeljack that built them.

    • Damian

      Ignore the other users reply.

In the UK comic (Might also be the U.S.) Shockwave flew to Earth to find out what had happened to the Transformers and the ARk, realising that Shockwave was a threat, re-activated 5 Transformers. The dominant life on the planet was obviously Dinosaurs so... .

The Dinobots attacked Shockwave but ended up in a tar pool until, many years later, Ratchet dug them out.

Who cares what happened in the UK comics except you Brits? True canon is the original animated series. In the animated series, Wheeljack AND Ratchet created the Dinobots, inspired via a discovery of dinosaur bones by Ironhide.

      • Andrew

hahahah Wheeljack, why the eff did you build the Dinobots with small brains? "Simple Brains, Optimus." "What...ever."

I remember back in the 80's when I was just a kid, we went to my parent's friend's house for a dinner. There was a grimlock toy and my friends Dad says "He can turn into an airplane, lets see if you can figure it out". I was never able to, but I know now that he was BSing and was just trying to keep me busy. What a jerk, lol

This game is a day 1 purchase now all I want to know is why Hasbro hasn't released any info on new Dinobot toy figures? As a collector this boggles the mind that they aren't being released the same day as the video game... Talk about dropping the ball.

    June 23, 2012 at 12:00 pm |
    • JonfromLI

If you're a collector then if I were you I'd go on e-bay and search for all of the original toys from the 80s. Anything that comes out new these days isn't worth the plastic covering encasing it. Remember when they released the new He-man toys several years ago? By now the toy stores couldn't pay you enough to get them off their shelves.

  24. Bill

Are they still going to be "one brick short of a load" as in the previous cartoon?

    June 23, 2012 at 10:51 am |
    • James

Actually, Grimlock himself has an incredibly high intelligence, at least in the original canon. He just has a robot speech impediment (screwed up wiring) that makes him sound like a doof. The Technobots (autobot combiners) got their intelligence from him.

(Don't know whether to be sad or proud that I know those details.......:) )

      June 23, 2012 at 11:08 am |
      • Vad

Technobots...did they combine to form Computron? I remember an episode where Computron was fighting another combined robot and calculating his percentage of victory as he was fighting. Hilarious. I haven't thought about that in years. That cartoon rocked.

        June 24, 2012 at 9:04 am |
    • JG

That" smart but speech impaired" thing may be the official line but Soundwave brain scans them in the first season when the dinobots are standing guard over a meteor and Megatron decides that their weekness is that the could be easily tricked. He then proceedes to hoodwink Grimlock into attacking Optimus Prime. Basically the whole episodes is based on Grimlock and the other dinobots being a little slow. Not trying to start a flame war or anything, but I think the view that he is really highly intelligent sounds a little revisionist based on the first few episodes. I mean in the first episode the appear in the dinobots flip out and the only way they get them under control is to add extra brain parts. 🙂

A fan since it all began "I would've waited an eternity for this..." and it has been an eternity (now 38) but am so so glad Transformers is finally getting the respect and creativity it deserves! This game is going to rule!!! Thank you Matt Tieger and crew for not only makin it happen again, but really sweating the details and delivering on so many levels (Berger is Grimlock!). Wonder if Frank Welker is Megatron this time? (icing on the cake!) If this game inspires a new film I sure hope they wise up and tap JJ Abrams, Matthew Vaugh...or whoever is directing the latest game trailers seems ideal too. Will not bother watchin another Bay film...ever!

My problem with the re-telling of the classics of Generation X to suit the political need to put a twist on things for Generation Y is the total lack of commitment to even attempt to keep the storyline "consistant" with its original form. I like my Dinobots 100 percent un-f'ed with. I mean look what happened to Lion-O... He used to be a beefed up bad-ass thundercat lord...... Now he's a teenager with emotional issues..... And poor Snarf....

    June 22, 2012 at 3:20 pm |
    • Young Prime

Be careful what you wish for since it's obvious that Hasbro likes to cut corners with their products thus giving us a lack luster combiner in the form of Fall Of Cybertron Bruticus. The combined mode is awfully disproportionate. And it's no wonder why those 3rd party companies are whipping them at their own game when it comes to quality.

      June 23, 2012 at 12:08 pm |
  29. Grandizer

My memory serves me correctly, I think that the Dinobots being built on earth had more power and stronger build then other Transformers from Cybertron. What they couldn't be given were the intelligence that Transformers form Cybertron have.
That is until Grimlock got smart and built the robots that formed Computron. 🙂 Of course then he transferred his smarts into Computron so that they could defeat Abominus.

I drive a Mclaren F1, and I would've provided the funding to a proper director. Michael Bay bungled and lost his chance. Sorry you're stuck with a Corolla, you should move out of your parents house, go back to school and get a degree.

    • Young Prime

If you know what you were talking about you'd be aware that a reluctant Bay was convinced$$$ to do Transformers. He had no initial passion for the series and it shows. That's the problem that most fans have regarding those movies. Look at every film his production company Platinum Dunes has touched and out of 5 remakes only one of them was decent enough to sanction a sequel. And with that Ninja Turtle catastrophe causing all kinds of turmoil its no wonder why it was pushed back indefinitely. So who cares what Bay drives when it's his directing and producing that ultimately crashes...

don't screw with "sir" grimlock too much, he had a pretty sweet robot form previously along with the others. The dinobots were the few that made it out alive in the original movie. They really were pretty awesome. I loved that they didn't combine into one big robot like every other small group yet were sent in to take out the likes of the combo robots like devastator.

Uh, actually they did.... The dinobots were the first "combo group" of Transformers I had. For some reason my local stores were always out of one figure I needed to make all the other ones.

In the original animated series, and the toys that went with it, they most certainly did not combine.
Can't speak for every other incarnation in comics, etc.

The first group of toys that combined into a big robot were the Constructicons to form Devastator.
I believe the Aerobots were next, then Stuntacons, then Protectobots and Combaticons.
