Marvel invites you to a Super Marriage

Hello again, fellow comic readers!

This week’s new comic Wednesday pick is Marvel Comics’ “Astonishing X-Men #50,”  a book that promises to generate a bit of controversy.

Spoiler alert! If you don’t want to know the “big deal” about this book, stop reading now and skip to the lower part of the post to see the list of books coming out this week.

Marvel Comics’ mutant character Northstar has not often been a headliner. If all you know about the X-Men is what you've seen in movies starring Hugh Jackman, then you likely don’t know him at all.

That changes with this week's “Astonishing X-Men #50” when Northstar takes center stage and prepares to go from one of the first openly gay superheroes in comics to the first married gay hero at Marvel. That's if his paramour and manager Kyle says yes, of course.

Northstar has had a tumultuous history. He starred in “Alpha Flight,” a long-running and well-remembered series for Marvel in the 80s and 90s, but his star fell not long after he came out as a gay man.

At the time his coming out was a huge development, but since then it has been ignored, played up for positive effect or played almost for laughs, such as a brief period where Northstar was retroactively declared to be an actual fairy. (Seriously, this is a storyline in a comic book you can own.)

“Astonishing X-Men #50” is an easy jumping on point for new readers of the line and has the added bonus of featuring Northstar, an X-Men character that I personally think is great.

He promotes AIDS awareness and mental health, two issues dear to his heart thanks to obstacles faced by his adopted daughter and his sister, respectively.

Earlier this year Archie comics had a same-sex wedding in its books that got a lot of press, but this is the first time a superhero is tying the knot.

I asked Marjorie Liu, the writer of this issue, if the controversy surrounding the Archie marriage figured into the storyline of this book.

“This is a love story and not a political statement,” Liu said. “Gay marriage is legal in New York state, and some of the X-Men who live there just happen to be gay. If they want to get married – well, why not? Not everyone will agree or be happy about it (in our book, and in real life), but that doesn't mean we shouldn't tackle those stories with passion and empathy for both sides.”

Conor Kilpatrick of believes the issue is a perfect fit for Marvel: “The X-Men have been, from the beginning, an allegory for civil rights, so it makes sense that in a time when gay rights is such a front-burner issue in American society that Marvel Comics would face it head-on with their X-Men characters.”

Marvel Comics first rose to prominence and popularity in the 1960s by more accurately and relevantly reflecting the issues of the day in its stories compared to its competition, DC Comics, so it's no surprise that in 2012 Marvel is taking on the issue of gay marriage.

Axel Alonso, Editor in Chief of Marvel Comics, agrees that this is a natural story for Marvel to tell.

“Marvel Comics are best when they respond to developments in the real world,” he said. “When gay marriage became legal in New York state, it raised a question: Since most of our heroes reside in that state, how would Northstar, the first openly gay character in comics, respond to this development? Would it change his long-term relationship with his partner, Kyle?”

Of course, this weekend at the KAPOW! comic book convention in England, DC Comics co-publisher Dan Didio announced that it would reveal a long-time character to be gay.

Daniel Dean, of Titan Games and Comics in Smyrna, Georgia, says comic readers should think twice before they get furious about the storyline in this book.

“Obviously the big hook is Northstar's potential status as Marvel's first married gay superhero. But for me this is just a major event in the story of a character I think is pretty neat,” Dean said.

It was about time Marvel revisited the issue of Northstar’s sexuality. The issue in which he came out was a big deal but the subject was pretty well glossed over immediately thereafter. For a long while it was as if nothing had happened.

"You had camps of fans that were pretty ticked about both; that is, there were people upset that Marvel had a gay mutant, but there were a ton of people who were more upset that apart from a big pronouncement he wasn't allowed to be gay in the comics,” Dean said.

Despite any disagreement in the X-Men fandom, “the fact that Marvel is making this happen now matters, and I think we all like to read stories which matter whether we agree with them or not,” he said.

There was a time in comics where some horrible disaster that threatened lives was preferable to a “gay” subplot. Now most comic fans can name at least a good half dozen or more gay characters without even thinking about it. More importantly, these characters usually have compelling stories and reasons to exist apart from being "the gay one,"  the same stigma that followed the token black member of many comics in the 40s, 50s, and 60s.

Comic fans have seen this kind of relationship blossom before, in Marvel's Wiccan and Hulkling, for example. This, however, represents a whole new line in the sand for Marvel, and it's an accomplishment unto itself. It's indicative of a completely different way of thinking. That's plenty controversial to some people, but perfectly in line with the message of books like the X-Men.

I hope things work out for the character, but, this being comics, few things work out like the heroes hope in the long run. Either way, I'll be reading.

So, until next week, go forth and read, my people. And the reading will be good!

Is there a comic out there that you really love? Let us know in the comments. We’re always looking for tips on good comics!

Here are some of the comics scheduled to hit the shelves on May 23, 2012. Your local retailer will probably have these and others, so make sure to check with them for more details.

Patrick – exactly. It's amazing when some people think bigotry is somehow more moral than marrying someone you love.

No we will not join your here and now thanks Sam......we will enjoy our here and now, and that will be without comic books that are showing a lifestyle that we do not agree with – the gay people themselves are not poison.....God loves them....but the message is poison. How would you like us christians to be able to hand out comics with Jesus to every kid in America, with only our biblical stand on this issue included...?

Soooooo....the gay "lifestlye?" Is that the one where they are fighting in court for (1) marriage – so that they can live in legally recognized, monogamous relaitonships (2) Family – so they can raise their children (biological and adopted) as a couple (3) Honor – so they can serve their country in the military.
Let's compare that to what the religious right is in the courts fighting for (1) control of women's reproductive rights (2) keeping their ministers out of jail for illicit se x ual conduct (3) protecting their assets from lawsuits and taxes.

They gay "lifestyle" seems a lot more ethical and moral to me.

Silly bigot you don't even know what the bible says...

“This is the sin of Sodom; she and her suburbs had pride, excess of food, and prosperous ease, but did not help or encourage the poor and needy. They were arrogant and this was abominable in God’s eyes.”
      Ezekiel 16:48-49

      May 24, 2012 at 1:46 pm |
    • MaybeAgnosticMaybeNot

God destroyed Sodom because Lot could not find 10 "righteous" people in the city. Had there been just 10 righteous, Sodom would have been spared. So by precedence, As long as there are some "righteous" people God will not destroy us. If your going to fearmonger atleast get it right, maybe actually read the Bible.

Yeah make sure you don't post the whole Sodom and Gomorrah story, like the part where Lot, the only righteous man to be found, the only one worth saving, was actually such a degenerate that he offers both his young virgin daughters to be r@ped by a r@pe gang of men. If that happened today, he'd be locked up, registered as a $ex offender, they'd be removed from his home for life...which probably would have been a good idea SEEING AS HOW HE GOT BOTH HIS YOUNG DAUGHTERS PREGNANT.

I don't understand why s3xu@l preferences should even be discussed in a comic book. I wasn't aware there was even a gay superhero. Why does s3xu@l preferences need to be represented anywhere? It should be kept in private. I don't care if you say in the closet, or what you call it. I don't go around saying "I love to sleep with hot women!". My personal business is mine and it should be both ways. What if I start a movement and declare myself a solo-s3xu@l? I think I should be able to marry myself. Put that in a comic! There should be a superhero who can't stop pounding one out! Then when your son asks you, "Daddy, what does solo-s3xu@l mean?" you can tell him to wait until he is 14 and then he will understand.

I just find it funny. This is an X-men comic, they are basically the comic world's allegory of people constantly discrimated on/oppressed/hated for being what they are. If anything this story is just natural for such a comic. Lets not forget this comic has been about diversity. They have Blacks, asians, catholics, muslims. Nearly every last major minority group.

  22. PRISM 1234

Ho-mo-s-exuality is and abnormality of what is natural. It doesn't mater how many "experts now days publish their "findings"....... its obvious they are slanted because of pressure to be "politically correct".

Even nature itself tells you that there is a certain order of things that make life on this earth as we know it. You mess with it, the consequences are far reaching!.
Even in animal species when some are not normal, the rest of the group rejects them, becaue it is in their nature to do so to preserve the natural order of things.
But why does man fight to to be accepted in his lewd nature? Because he loves his ways and will fight tooth and nail to keep himself gratified.....
We are no animals, we are human beings. We were created in the image of God, and He is the one who set the laws in nature, and has made His standard known of what is right and what is wrong to all mankind, by imprinting it on our consciences. Every person REALLY KNOWS, but those who choose to silence the voices of their consciences, at one point they pretended not to know, ignoring the voices of their consciences, till God turned them over to reprobate minds an they became numb to the truth, believing a lie.
To those who disagree with things said here... no matter what your reason is, the truth will never change, friend, we can't do away with it.... we can deny it, fume about it, revolt against it, hate those who uphold it and face us with it, but in the end the Truth will still stand, and every man's opinion will prove to be nothing.
There is no Real peace to those who fight against it. Because you're fighting against God! And He is the One to whom we all will give account of our lives!

I agree with you Prism that there is a "truth" out there...but I find it funny that you seem to be so confident that YOUR truth is the 'ultimate' truth. What makes you know better than anyone else? Because a book tells you so? If I write a book that tells a different truth do I have equal rights to say it's true? You have no actual evidence to back up your "truth", justwhat you state your "conscience" tells you...that's really not all that convincing.

I don't get it. Marvel wants to be more culturally relevant then why don't we have "the Economy Avenger" or something. Teach kids about how valuable it is not to mess up a country's economy. He could fight wallstreet corruption at night and have some random day job or goes to college or supports a family along with a hard working partner and has kids. I am not against gay marriage, I just think the more that gay marriage is made an issue the more opposition it is going to get. I am a Democrat, I have always been a Democrat but, the fact that gay marriage and constantly pressing gay marriage into society will not make it easier for marriage equality to happen and the biggest focus in this country should be on the economy, and getting America back into the right direction. I believe that we should be accepting to gay people and allow them to marry but, I am incredibly tired of hearing about it.

    May 23, 2012 at 7:05 pm |
    • Andrew

Couldn't you have said the exact, word for word, same thing about civil rights legislation in 1964 when we were in the middle of a cold war and had vietnam going on? There will ALWAYS be things that people say are "more pressing" but does that mean we should ignore civil rights?

Frankly, if gays didn't push the whole 'gay marriage' issue, they wouldn't see any progress at all. When exactly would be a 'good time' for them to bring it up? When there are no problems in the US, at all? That's never going to happen, there's never a convinent time to bring it up, people will always say "we should be worried about other things". So at least by bringing it up, they keep the issue relevant, rather than risk losing any progress they've already made.

Nothing good has ever come from a chunk of the population staying silent about discrimination.

      May 23, 2012 at 8:48 pm |
    • Champloo

Anne – The funniest thing about all the equal rights/gay rights/gay marriage debate and media exposure is that this wasn't as big of an issue for the GLBT community UNTIL the religious right started lobbying to change state and federal law to prevent what they think of as an abomination. It is not just the 'gays' that are pushing their agenda but also the right wingers that are pushing their anti-gay agenda. Both sides are causing the media frenzy.

Everyone – In any case, I don't understand how religion plays into this...separation of state, etc. Equal rights means just that: everyone should have equal rights as long as they don't infringe on others' liberties (and just b/c some people don't 'like' what others are doing in their personal lives, its not infringing on their liberties). I hardly think that two consenting adults (GLBT) wanting the same rights and protections as two other consenting adults (non-GLBT) should be an issue in today's society.

    May 23, 2012 at 6:20 pm |
  34. Casey

    Gurgi – H o m o s e x u a l i t y was removed as a disorder from the DSM because of studies (the first of which was in 1957) that showed that there was, "No scientific basis for inferring a predisposition to psychopathology or other maladjustment as intrinsic to h o m o s e x u a l i t y or b i s e x u a l i ty." Source – American Psychological Assocation.

Lobbying by gay groups did not cause the change. H o m o s e x u a l i t y was removed as a disorder from the DSM in 1973. There were precious few gay groups in existence in 1973, and they had little, if any, political influence.

  37. Jim

Geez, anything for a buck. Come on, Marvel comics! How utterly silly....a man marrying another man, a woman marrying another woman. And so many make it like it's simply the "religious" people who are against this. Nope. Marrying the opposite gender has nothing to do with religion (although that's obviously been a large part of it for so many centuries). Opposite genders are different, in case you haven't noticed, and this is the only way the species can be propagated and whether a couple wants or doesn't want to have kids is irrelevant. And this has NOTHING to do with "equal rights" idiotic can you get.

    May 23, 2012 at 5:57 pm |
    • Patrick

And nature creates hermaphrodites and people with over 20 different conditions that give them the PHYSICAL characteristics of BOTH genders. Nature also creates many animal species that have a percentage of their population that is EXCLUSIVELY ho mo $e_xual and will never mate with the opposite gender in their lifetime. But nature also creates minds like yours that are so tiny, that even in the presence of that evidence, you can't possibly imagine that a percentage of humans would be wired to be attracted to the same gender only. How sad.

      May 23, 2012 at 6:01 pm |
      • Gurgi

And all those "20 different conditions," are not "normal." Or they would not be labeled "conditions."

        May 23, 2012 at 6:11 pm |
      • Patrick

They may not be "normal" if you define "normal" as "not experienced by the majority". But if that's true, being blue-eyed or left-handed certainly isn't normal.

        May 23, 2012 at 6:15 pm |
      • Patrick

@Gurgi – What's sad is that you know you didn't choose your $e xu ali -ty, and couldn't have changed it if you wanted to, yet you imagine that gays somehow can.

        May 23, 2012 at 6:19 pm |
      • Gurgi

Being "blue-eyed or left handed" are not labeled as "conditions." Therein lies the difference.

        May 23, 2012 at 6:20 pm |
      • Patrick

Exactly. The difference is a label.

        May 23, 2012 at 6:24 pm |
      • Patrick

And there was a time when being left handed was labeled as a condition and teachers and nuns were free to crack the knuckles of left handed students with rulers for being "de viant".

        May 23, 2012 at 6:25 pm |
      • Patrick

I really wouldn't see the value of getting into a conversation with Sarah Palin to convince her that she should make sure her baby knows that he's abnormal.

        May 23, 2012 at 6:27 pm |
      • Kijvera

@Gurgi: Actually being left handed was considered a 'condition' for many centuries. Children who displayed a preference for their left hand were often beaten, and forced to use their right hand because of the many negative conotations for the left hand found in the Bible. Being left handed was considered to be cursed, unlucky, or as a sign of the influence of the Devil.

Being gay or lesbian is no more a condition than being straight is.

        May 23, 2012 at 6:52 pm |
    • Casey

Jim – This has EVERYTHING to do with equal rights. H e t e r o s e x u a l s can marry the person they love, gays cannot. That is not equality.

      May 23, 2012 at 6:02 pm |
      • Patrick

When Jim tells you that you have the same right to marry the opposite gender that he does, ask him if you can marry his daughter.

        May 23, 2012 at 6:04 pm |
      • calvin

Uhhhh. There are lots of situations where people can't marry the one they love. Get with it!

        May 23, 2012 at 6:14 pm |

@calvin – We're talking about consenting unrelated adults, not in ce st or pa ra phi1ias which have been proven by modern psychology to be harmful.

        May 23, 2012 at 6:17 pm |
    • Donnie the Lion

Jim, that's crazy....we're propagating at a viral rate already. We need less children being born. If at least 10% of married couple are not procreating, that's a great thing.

      May 23, 2012 at 6:15 pm |
      • billybob

With gay marriage, more children will be born. BOTH parents will want children, why would they get married in the first place? It makes no sense whatsoever for them to get married, they want the tax breaks for themselves and the split family tree they will create.

More proof that gays are trying to target children

    May 23, 2012 at 5:56 pm |
    • Patrick

Wrong. All you have to do if you want to see the percentage of gays who mo1est is go to a $ex offender registry like the one for the State of Texas that lists the age and gender of each mo1ester's victim(s). You can enter even a gay-friendly zip code and pull a random sample and you'll see that well over 90% are men mo1esting little girls ONLY. 2 to 3% are women molesters. 2 to 3% are men who molested both genders. 2 to 3% are men who molested males only.

WOW! They're pushing it and rubbing it in our faces day in and day out! Such determination, you would think they are fighting for somethong right and noble! But it's not, and it'll never be accepted as normal, because it's NOT!

    May 23, 2012 at 5:39 pm |
    • Kevin Nivek

Actually, no one is rubbing it in your face... but I suspect that deep down inside, you wish some guy was.

      May 23, 2012 at 5:43 pm |
    • Andrew

"Pushing it in our faces"? You're a) Not required to read the comic book or read these articles, and b) fail to realize how being 'straight' is pushed in 'our faces' constantly.

If you see straight couples kissing in public constantly, if you see it on TV frequently, if you see straight couples getting married both finctionally and in public, then how are gay people doing the same thing "pushing it in your faces"? Are you that annoyed by people admitting gays actually exist?

Do you get this upset when you see a straight marriage on television? Isn't that 'pushing straightness'?

      May 23, 2012 at 5:44 pm |
    • Casey

FedUp! – H o m o s e x u a l i t y is considered a normal part of human s e x u a l i t y by the following professional mental health associations: The American Psychological Association, the American Psychiatric Association, the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, the American Counseling Association, the Canadian Psychological Association, and the National Association of Social Workers.

      May 23, 2012 at 5:53 pm |
    • Patrick

Wow. But when we see a straight relationship in a magazine or on screen, that's not rubbing our faces in it, right? And it's actually not, because we have no problem with that. You're just ultra paranoid and ultra sensitive and probably quite ho-mo_pho bic.

      May 23, 2012 at 5:53 pm |
    • Patrick

The World Health Organization, the American Medical Association, the American Psychiatric Association, the American Psychological Association, the National Association of Social Workers, the American Counseling Association, and the American Academy of Pediatrics all say ho-mos_exuality is a normal unchangeable variant of human $e_xu-ality. Get over it.

      May 23, 2012 at 5:54 pm |
      • Gurgi

The organizations you and Casey mention bowed to pressure to be "policitally correct." As the LGBT is a quite vocal (therefore powerful) minority. How can it be "normal" when it has not even been decided if it is a "choice" of lifestyle by the individual, or proven to be genetic? Logically, the only way it could be halfway considered to be normal would be if it is proven to be genetic. Also the small percentage of gays in the human population prove it is not "normal."

        May 23, 2012 at 6:03 pm |
      • Patrick

Yes those organizations bowed under the tremendous pressure in 1973, LOL!

Wrong. They removed it as a disorder because there was no proof it was a disorder. Ho mo_se-xuals, unlike others with mental disorders have no evidence of associated pathologies, boundary issues that pervade other areas of their lives or character disorders...and no identifiable cause.

That being said, of course when they removed it there were plenty in the APA that disagreed (for the same reason people used to think being left-handed was deviant – because it's different and experienced by a minority) and vowed to return with proof it was a disorder. They never found any.

        May 23, 2012 at 6:07 pm |
      • Gurgi

There is a larger percentage of "lefties," in the world, than there are gay. What I said still stands.

        May 23, 2012 at 6:14 pm |
      • Andrew

There weren't in 1973, and they had just about no clout, politicial, social, or otherwise. There was no 'gay movement' back in the early 1970s, and academic literature seldom bows to political pressure in any case. Your point really doesn't stand, you'd LIKE to think "oh, they just bowed to pressure" because you don't want to recognize that it's actually possible for you to have a wrong position on a subject.

        May 23, 2012 at 6:20 pm |
      • LJ

You sound a little upset...could it be that you're a closet gay?

        May 23, 2012 at 6:26 pm |
      • LJ

Patrick, that last comment was meant for you.

        May 23, 2012 at 6:27 pm |
      • Andrew

I should add that while there is no "gay gene", there are genetic components to h-mos-xuality. That is to say, studies of identical twins show that if one twin is gay, the other is far more likely to be gay than with fraternal twins. If it was entirely genetic, that'd be 100%, but if there was no genetic aspect to s-xuality, then identical twins would match the ratio with fraternal twins.

What this means is that s-xual orientation is more complex than what could be accounted for with a single gene. Number of male older brothers also makes you far more likely to be gay, indicating some pre-natal enviornmental conditions also help establish s-xuality. There seem to be many factors which cause it, some different for others, but the one clear constant is that no one chooses their s-xuality.

        May 23, 2012 at 6:28 pm |
      • Patrick

The lefties are like 12%. You're saying if it's over a certain percent it's okay? Do you draw the line at 8? 10?

        May 23, 2012 at 6:29 pm |
      • Gurgi

@Andrew, actually there were such groups even back in the 60s, mostly in California (it was called the state of "fruits and nuts" back then, especially by folks in the midwest). When they made the news, I remember it stirring my Dad up something awful. Though he had little tolerance for gay people or hippies. He didn't see a lot of difference between them.

        May 23, 2012 at 6:31 pm |
      • Gurgi

@LJ, I don't think Patrick is in the closet. We are just having a discussion of opposing viewpoints. He is gay, and I'm not. But that doesn't mean we can't discuss our differences respectfully. I don't think he was sounding upset, but I could be wrong.

        May 23, 2012 at 6:34 pm |
      • Andrew

The groups existing doesn't mean they had any real power, you've honestly got very little to substantiate that they had ANY influence over the academic community. But for some reason you prefer to believe "gays got them to remove it as a disease because of political correctness" rather than the also possible "... there simply was no evidence to substantiate its classification as a disease/disorder".

The academic community is usually fairly good about not bowing to political or societal pressures, and you need some pretty strong arguments with some pretty strong displays of pressure applied to indicate that gays changed anything in the academic community because of 'political correctness'. That's a tall order for a conspiricy.

Sometimes I wonder if you people go breaking into gay couples' houses and then accuse them of "flaunting" their "lifestyle" in front of you. If you don't want to see a gay superhero, don't buy the book. Is that easy enough for you, bub?

    Dear CNN,

Please have your authors do a fact check instead of becoming puppets for the PR departments of businesses (they already are for politicians). This is not the first gay marriage. Wildstorm had a civil union in the 90's by Midnighter and Apollo, both being two of the first gay characters in comics and being outed well before Marvel touched the issue. Wildstorm's creation was picked up by DC and reset in last year's 52. You can follow it in the Storm Watch comic (which this author mentions being sold this week, but the list is an obvious cut and paste from a shipping web site).

Editors, hold your writers accountable. this article was a waste of time.

    May 23, 2012 at 5:34 pm |
  45. bobo

Apparently this is the most important issue in America. Tax relief: no, affordable housing: no, stable employment: no, gay marriage:...wait a minute, you almost had me there.

    May 23, 2012 at 5:33 pm |
    • Andrew

So Americans can only focus on a single issue at a time? Back in 1964 I'm sure the country had *nothing* else to worry about other than civil rights, right? I mean it's not like we were in the middle of an incredibly tense cold war as well as having to deal with Vietnam, right?

Equal rights are important, and the country is capable about caring for more than one issue at a time.

      May 23, 2012 at 5:40 pm |
    • MashaSobaka

The fact that you are only reading the articles about civil rights battles and not the articles about tax relief/unemployment/war/etc says a lot more about you than it does about which issues Americans find important.

I am not very religious, and don't necessarily believe in "god." But I have seen enough in my life to believe that Shakespeare had it right, "there are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio, than are dreamt of in your philosophy." So for all the "God haters," you might want to be a little careful.

When I was in the middle east, I discovered that muslims have a saying, "women are for children, men are for fun." Which really makes me wonder about them, with what the religion of islam says about gays. Sick and wrong! Comics are for children. They do not need to be exposed to these concepts until they are in their adulthood.

If you knew anything about the state of comics in 2012, you'd know that the only people really reading comics now are adults. Do you think a kid wants to spend $4 on a comic book??

      May 23, 2012 at 4:45 pm |

Woah there! Comics are NOT for children! If you're letting your kids read those, you need to stop now. They are definitely made for adults.

I just lost a little respect for Marvel. Let’s keep comics about fantasy and fun for the kids and a little less about forcing someone else’s political views on other peoples kids. I doubt the gay community would like it very much if DC comics came out with a Catholic Super Hero who preaches that marriage is only between a man and a woman. Leave the kids out of it.

    May 23, 2012 at 4:27 pm |
    • Seth

Comics have always been a way to let rational ideas reach people. There's nothing wrong with a gay-superhero, its not pushing a view on you, some people are gay. If there was a superhero who just preached the Bible, then that would be pushing a view.

      May 23, 2012 at 4:37 pm |
      • tkindsm

This seems to be a common problem with Liberal and Atheist groups – they don't see that pushing their “anti-religious” or “pro-gay” view points on others is just as wrong as Bible thumpers pushing their religious viewpoints on others. Both sides need to mind their own P’s and Q’s and leave other people alone. Especially other people’s kids.

        May 23, 2012 at 4:53 pm |
    • deathwombat

Yes, how dare Marvel acknowledge that gay people exist, or that they sometimes get married. And even though there are more adults than children who read comic books, comic book publishers should steer clear of any issue that is even remotely controversial. God forbid that they be allowed to write anything for the adults in their audience.

      May 23, 2012 at 4:52 pm |
    • jord

Umm, a Catholic like Nightcrawler? He is always talking about his faith. He doesn't preach against gay marriage, but depicting a gay wedding isn't exactly speaking for gay marriage. It's just showing a real thing that real people do. There are comic characters to represent just about anyone you can think of, including religious and gay characters.

      May 23, 2012 at 5:27 pm |
      • Silver

Actually as far as I recall Nightcrawler(at least from the ultimate series) was pretty much against gays. He pretty much stopped befriending collosus because he was gay in that version(at least for a time)

Why a gay marriage for Northstar? Why a marriage at all for Northstar? How many other mutants have had an edition dedicated to their marriage? I think the most effective gay marriage in the popular media was the marriage of Sam Adama in Caprica. He was a ruthless, violent, hard-to-like character that played a distinct role in the unfolding of the drama. Oh yeah, he was married to a man. They didn't discuss it, they didn't make his husband central in any way to his character, you only captured glimpses of this relationship. It was just that he was married to a man, and that was perfectly normal. Very effective potrayal in a TV series, if you ask me.

Any time someone in show business "comes out", it is usually a sign of failure (Rosie, Ellen are just two examples). If it takes gayness to shore up a show, comic, or personality, oblivion is right around the corner. The other big favorite is claiming molestation as a child. Can't these people and publications succeed without pandering?

    May 23, 2012 at 4:07 pm |

  76. It's A Comic

Come on people. It's a comic. I read a comic for a whole mess of fighting, creative super powers and well-drawn characters. I don't read a comic to waste 10 minutes of my life watching a marriage. I mean c'mon this is a comic, this is fun. Why have they never done a marriage before? Because if a hero marries a non-hero, the non-hero is instantly a target. Now if Marvel ignores this, it seems stupid to me as it'd be interesting to watch. But, on the other side, should they get married they can't kill Kyle either because they'll look anti-gay. In my opinion this puts them in a position where nobody wins.

I do not consider myself liberal or conservative...I also feel to each there own ones decisions is between that person and god...However I am VERY upset by this, my young child reads Marvel comics as I am sure a lot of other parents young child and it sickens me that they feel that this is appropriate for young readers...My son is a huge fan of X-Men and the Avengers as well as my husband and myself...I know that Northstar come out along time ago and then they went no where with that story as it should have been....Needless to say We will no longer be buying Astonishing X-Men as long as this kind of story line is on the front burner...Ok I have put in my two cents....

    May 23, 2012 at 4:01 pm |

I know RIGHT?!? How dare they allow a white super hero to marry a black man! I will NOT have my children reading that and thinking it is right! What are they doing thinking that is appropriate for kids?

See how STUPID you sound? You are nothing but a bigot.

      May 23, 2012 at 4:31 pm |
    • Common Sense

I understand the concern of censoring inappropriate media from young readers- but I would like to know what about a marriage is considered "inappropriate." Hasn't your child read the marriages of the straight characters in the comics? Hasn't he seen characters kissing? Hasn't he seen characters fighting, k i lling, so on and so forth? How is all of that somehow more /appropriate/ than a couple of characters saying their "I do's" and maybe sharing a kiss.

Your child will most likely glance over the page, shrug, and go on reading the rest of the comic, because he only really cares about the action scenes. If he asks for an explanation, all you have to say is "Well i guess they just decided to get married."

You don't have to talk about s e x with him because this issue isn't about /that/. It's about two men holding hands and getting married.

It's no more "inappropriate" than a man and a woman doing the exact same thing.

      There's /my/ two cents.

      May 23, 2012 at 4:38 pm |
      • Henry

Common gay is not the NORMAL actions; even biologically we are made a certain way so we can reproduce it men to men or women to women were able to reproduce then I would say this is the natural selection of things. That is not the same here either. It is natural for men and woman it is not natural for two of the same kind to show affection. There is a difference and it has a place for it in an adult setting not in a comic book. Let children gloss over action scene after action seen not bombard them with this crap.

        May 23, 2012 at 4:47 pm |

Im completely fine with gay, straight, – whatever you want to do, as long as it doesnt hurt others – but, I just dont think its necessary in super hero comics. I thought the point was the fight against the evil villian – not social commentary. I dont think a straight marriage has any place in super hero comics – thats just not what they are about in my mind...

    May 23, 2012 at 3:34 pm |

maybe fighting against the evil villian IS social commentary

You must not know much about comics. They haven't been as simple as "good guy smashes bad guy" in at least 40 years. Spider-Man has been married to Mary Jane off and on, through deaths, rebirths, clones, divorces, smoking addiction, affairs, ad nauseum since 1987. Northstar first came out as gay in 1992. And comics were talking about social issues LONG before these two events.

he's an x-man... few other comics are as much a social commentary tool as that series. it seems few people who actually read comics have a problem with this.

Bigmouth Brian: Go to the gay person's parents and tell them you want their child exterminated. See what that gets you. With any luck, it will get you a 9mm between the eyes

        May 23, 2012 at 3:41 pm |

That's okay. I would honestly like you exterminated.

        Come on Brian....exterminate all gays???

I agree. You open CNN's website and every day there is a new "gay" story or issue read about. CNN definately has an agenda.

Cnn has become so predictible and so biased. When they have taken this much time and energy to give all air time to support the gay agenda – instead of covering the story from both sides.....understanding that free speech is on the table – in the end they will lose......long term. Cnn you are no longer a credible new operation.....haven't been for years now – but heres a new word you need to get used – Sanctions

Just curious. What's the "other side of the agenda." Catholic priests talking about how sinful it is for males to boink males? Could they do that with a straight face?

        May 23, 2012 at 7:20 pm |

Yes....let's tell all the gays to turn it off now.

Really, Scott? You're that offended? What is it with you conservatives, you're such a hateful, intolerant bunch.

How did you even know that Scott is a conservative? Your a dooshbag gay loving liberal fa-gg your self. We dont want to see all this gay stuff dont you get it? We will exterminate your gay kind in the future i promise you that.

brian: more big mouth bloviating. you will not eliminate gays because straight people keep on giving birth to them. now, boy, go home and get your shinebox....

        May 23, 2012 at 3:43 pm |
      • Sunny1

Hmm, did anyone else notice that everyone on this thread who is against gays seems to be brimming with hatred and can't construct a complete sentence? Brian even gives us a nice "extermination" threat, but I'm willing to bet the irony will be lost on him the next time he accuses liberals of being like Hitler. It's sad, what has become of the right-wing.

        May 23, 2012 at 3:52 pm |
      • Norm

Brian is one of those keyboard warriors.
He's so afraid of gays he won't leave the house anymore because he thinks he might catch it and start hanging WHAM posters all over his mother's basement.

        May 23, 2012 at 4:56 pm |
      • JCNow

That's exactly it. Conservative bigots DON'T WANT TO SEE IT. Somehow gays existing in society like everyone else is now cramming the lifestyle down their throats. Too bad it doesn't work that way. I have a big problem with all those Republicans that believe they have the right to be out in public. Can we put them in the closet?

I should know this but which is the bride and which is the groom? Or perhaps at the wedding the men attending can kiss both?

      • Rob

Since when has the idea of comic books been to recognize all the people that exist?

        May 23, 2012 at 5:10 pm |
      • Paul S

They are both grooms...both males... The idea that in a gay couple there is a "man" and a "woman" is part of the Christianazi agenda...being gay means that you want to love, own real estate and share a lifetime with a MAN...not a woman, or a man that wants to be a woman, or a child....I know in your black and white brain this is difficult to comprehend but go ahead try.... Now go get another beer and hot pocket

These are two DRAWINGS getting married. Not real life, although the US would do well to allow marriage equality. That's a different discussion, however. The point is, this is a fantasy – not real. Kinda like the bible is a fantasy and not real. See?

    May 23, 2012 at 3:10 pm |
    • esmiranda

Kinda like two people of the same gender think they are having a "real" marriage – but it's just pretend. Funny how people can spin that insult any which way to get their hate out.

      May 23, 2012 at 3:25 pm |
      • sam stone

two people of the gender can have a real marriage. after all, it is the government which determines what a "real marriage" is

        May 24, 2012 at 12:43 pm |
    • Willy

Careful David. Your hatred of religion is showing.

      May 23, 2012 at 3:26 pm |
    • Rob

The bible is based partly on historical events, not makebelieve characters. So you are either ignorant of the Bible or just spewing hate. I would hope this is a comic that is in an adult (non minor) section of comic book stores if there is one. I just don't think this would be proper reading for a 8 year old.

      May 23, 2012 at 4:01 pm |
      • Johan

Perhaps it's not ignorance or hatred of religion. Rather, perhaps it is the acknowledgement of his belief the bible (whether signifying true historical events or not withstanding) is just fantasy. There's nothing wrong with being an atheist or agnostic; it's simply a tenet of his belief system. As is your belief in the bible as the word or god, or whatever.

Abraham Lincoln Vampire Hunter is based partly on historical events, for all that that matters.
