Hello again, fellow comic readers!
This week’s new comic Wednesday pick is Marvel Comics’ “Astonishing X-Men #50,” a book that promises to generate a bit of controversy.
Spoiler alert! If you don’t want to know the “big deal” about this book, stop reading now and skip to the lower part of the post to see the list of books coming out this week.
Marvel Comics’ mutant character Northstar has not often been a headliner. If all you know about the X-Men is what you've seen in movies starring Hugh Jackman, then you likely don’t know him at all.
That changes with this week's “Astonishing X-Men #50” when Northstar takes center stage and prepares to go from one of the first openly gay superheroes in comics to the first married gay hero at Marvel. That's if his paramour and manager Kyle says yes, of course.
Northstar has had a tumultuous history. He starred in “Alpha Flight,” a long-running and well-remembered series for Marvel in the 80s and 90s, but his star fell not long after he came out as a gay man.
At the time his coming out was a huge development, but since then it has been ignored, played up for positive effect or played almost for laughs, such as a brief period where Northstar was retroactively declared to be an actual fairy. (Seriously, this is a storyline in a comic book you can own.)
“Astonishing X-Men #50” is an easy jumping on point for new readers of the line and has the added bonus of featuring Northstar, an X-Men character that I personally think is great.
He promotes AIDS awareness and mental health, two issues dear to his heart thanks to obstacles faced by his adopted daughter and his sister, respectively.
Earlier this year Archie comics had a same-sex wedding in its books that got a lot of press, but this is the first time a superhero is tying the knot.
I asked Marjorie Liu, the writer of this issue, if the controversy surrounding the Archie marriage figured into the storyline of this book.
“This is a love story and not a political statement,” Liu said. “Gay marriage is legal in New York state, and some of the X-Men who live there just happen to be gay. If they want to get married – well, why not? Not everyone will agree or be happy about it (in our book, and in real life), but that doesn't mean we shouldn't tackle those stories with passion and empathy for both sides.”
Conor Kilpatrick of iFanboy.com believes the issue is a perfect fit for Marvel: “The X-Men have been, from the beginning, an allegory for civil rights, so it makes sense that in a time when gay rights is such a front-burner issue in American society that Marvel Comics would face it head-on with their X-Men characters.”
Marvel Comics first rose to prominence and popularity in the 1960s by more accurately and relevantly reflecting the issues of the day in its stories compared to its competition, DC Comics, so it's no surprise that in 2012 Marvel is taking on the issue of gay marriage.
Axel Alonso, Editor in Chief of Marvel Comics, agrees that this is a natural story for Marvel to tell.
“Marvel Comics are best when they respond to developments in the real world,” he said. “When gay marriage became legal in New York state, it raised a question: Since most of our heroes reside in that state, how would Northstar, the first openly gay character in comics, respond to this development? Would it change his long-term relationship with his partner, Kyle?”
Of course, this weekend at the KAPOW! comic book convention in England, DC Comics co-publisher Dan Didio announced that it would reveal a long-time character to be gay.
Daniel Dean, of Titan Games and Comics in Smyrna, Georgia, says comic readers should think twice before they get furious about the storyline in this book.
“Obviously the big hook is Northstar's potential status as Marvel's first married gay superhero. But for me this is just a major event in the story of a character I think is pretty neat,” Dean said.
It was about time Marvel revisited the issue of Northstar’s sexuality. The issue in which he came out was a big deal but the subject was pretty well glossed over immediately thereafter. For a long while it was as if nothing had happened.
"You had camps of fans that were pretty ticked about both; that is, there were people upset that Marvel had a gay mutant, but there were a ton of people who were more upset that apart from a big pronouncement he wasn't allowed to be gay in the comics,” Dean said.
Despite any disagreement in the X-Men fandom, “the fact that Marvel is making this happen now matters, and I think we all like to read stories which matter whether we agree with them or not,” he said.
There was a time in comics where some horrible disaster that threatened lives was preferable to a “gay” subplot. Now most comic fans can name at least a good half dozen or more gay characters without even thinking about it. More importantly, these characters usually have compelling stories and reasons to exist apart from being "the gay one," the same stigma that followed the token black member of many comics in the 40s, 50s, and 60s.
Comic fans have seen this kind of relationship blossom before, in Marvel's Wiccan and Hulkling, for example. This, however, represents a whole new line in the sand for Marvel, and it's an accomplishment unto itself. It's indicative of a completely different way of thinking. That's plenty controversial to some people, but perfectly in line with the message of books like the X-Men.
I hope things work out for the character, but, this being comics, few things work out like the heroes hope in the long run. Either way, I'll be reading.
So, until next week, go forth and read, my people. And the reading will be good!
Is there a comic out there that you really love? Let us know in the comments. We’re always looking for tips on good comics!

His super power is... NO GAG REFLEX
Politically correct does not make it morally correct!
And who are you to speak to moral correctness?
If Obama had a son... He'd be like Northstar
I don't care who you are... thats funny!
Naaahhh, Obama himself, is like Northstar.
Canadian?
And the slippery slope is absolutely valid. There is no reason (under the current humanist thinking) that forbids two gay brothers from marrying. I'll bet many gay supporters here would already be for it.
Conservative atheist says – two men having anal intercourse is disgusting and I don't need god to tell me that – and those who disagree are brainwashed freaks. Our society is disgusting.
I am a conservative atheist. I am straight. I don't think much about two men having intercourse. Why do you? As far as the two brothers marrying, let's see some proof of support among gay people. Otherwise, you are just talking out of your south end
Good grief. Do comic books really need to be a politically correct proving ground for kids? What's next, A super hero dressed up as the queen of hearts called Captain Poker Face?
That's funny.
I suppose those who never get outside from their computers find it amusing to pick on others constantly; Cyberbullies? Self-loathers? You must be seeing something of yourself in this topic, or you wouldn't protest so much, lol.
Either love comics & related movies – or move along, move along, to that same old song. ;>
STFU Julie, before I marry you off to my Boston Terrier
The poor oppressed gay minority – the poor oppressed mutant minority: how neat.
The poor oppressed gay minority with the entire media and federal government at their beckon call – go cry wolf to somebody else, its getting very old.
II could not agree more with you. Do we REALLY need a gay superhero? I think the gays get enough help from the Government, they do not need comic books also.
What happened to fighting bad guys?
Beckon call?
What is this help that gays supposedly get from the government?
Let the HULK beat the gay right out of them LOL!!!
I would think the Hulk would be sympathetic, considering everyone always called him a monster.
The one on the left looks like LZ...
What I really want to know is does his b@#$hole whistle when he flys? and is Marvel going to draw that into the comic?
HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY~
FAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks for coming out to all of us, we thought you were gay. Either that or you're announcing you are a cigarette.
How gay.
We've let the gays out of the closet so that they can get societies acceptance. When are we going to let the potheads out of the closet so that they can start getting societies acceptance?
Medical marijuana is legal in 16 states and DC. Gay marriage is legal in six states and DC. You're doing better than we are.
Hopefully soon
I agree with another post from earlier. I'm so sick and tired of hearing about gay this, gay that i dont care what happens. Talk about beatin a dead horse. This subject has been so beatin it's lost any coherence. The other day I went to the park it was a nice day, people flyin kites then of course ya see a multicolored rainbow flag flyin high, i'm like good grief it's every now.. cant even go to a park without seein a reference to Gay pride and i dont even live in New york.
Amen
Seeing a rainbow flag is just like seeing an Asian flag by an Asian or a Euorpean flag hung by a Euorpean. It is just showing pride in who they are and they are not afriad to show it.
You call it "beatin a dead horse" we call it fighting for equal rights. Being a human being yet being denied the same rights and respect as other people is kind of a big issue. ESPECIALLY being in America, a country founded on diversity and acceptance (well it used to be anyway). I find it so funny that people often forget that they are only here because of immigration. Those immigrants had to fight for their respect and rights, were they beating a dead horse to? Get real and stop being so ignorant.
The best way to fight for something is to learn to pick your battles. Trying to fight every battle, and you end up losing. Kind of what will happen to this movement if the pace contiues.
There's a subtle rewrite of history. Our fore fathers, escaping brutal European oppression and heavy taxation, escaped other countries and came to the US for........equal rights(say it slowly when you say it) and to be free to poke men in the a$$? There you have it.
I find it hilarious that people are on here grandstanding about two drawings getting married. Not that I care either way, whatever floats your boat. But who wants to read a comic about a wedding? What's next? Thor going to the opthalmologist?
Wait til you see the one about Hulk's colonoscopy.
lmao
No kidding. I leave being concerned about this to the religious bigots and hateful morons, but seriously a comic about marriage? Drama and suspense just isn't found in flower arrangements.
Please explain to us how your opposition to traditional marriage and religious beliefs is not hatred and bigotry as well.
How is this opposition to traditional marriage and religious beliefs? I don't recall anyone saying that straight people should be barred from marrying, or that people cannot hold traditional religious beliefs. This is about equal protection under the law.
Awesome
Actually I always liked the Wedding comics, except when they were dumb and bad guys crashed the wedding. It's fun to see the extended family & relations of the characters or Teams get together and it's a nice change of pace. If you read comics you see a million stories fighting the bad guys but sometimes it's the stories that are a little different that stand out. In X-Men back when I really followed it some of my favorite stories have been the "downtime ones" – the ones where the X-Men take a day off and play baseball, the one where Cyclops & Madelyne Pryor were on honeymoon, the one where Dazzler is stalked by an obsessive fan, the one where the guys and the girls have a night out on the town, where Longshot returns all the treasures the Reavers stole to their rightful owners, etc.
I wonder, with stuff like this, Batwoman(DC), etc. Do they do this because they really and truly want to, or to ride the wave of pro-gay activism and gets some extra sales and backing from the liberal side of the spectrum?
Honestly, I don't care. Was never a Marvel fan and this doesn't affect me at all. Still that question forever pervades me.
Wow, that makes this article super-gay.
So Superman marries SpiderMan. Batman marries Captain America and Ironman marries Cyclops and so on. Perhaps President Obama is Gay too. And Mitt Romney too. Yup! Every body in the World is Gay. We are ALL VERY VERY happy now. And please teach your Children – Being Gay is Good for Them. Yes. Thankyou for Reading. It is a Wonderful World!
Northstar has been gay for a long time. Talking about Cyclops or Captain America or anyone else being made into a gay character is just stupid. That's not what's happenign here at all. A gay character is getting married – that's all. Move on with your life.
I'm not in favor of gay marriage on a personal level, but I'm not gay so I'm not going to marry a gay man. I'm also not in favor of people being mistreated because they are different. So, all of you who disagree with gay marriage, don't worry about it. It will be okay. Breathe. And to those who consider this a huge victory, enjoy the comic.
I just love the moral relativity you show here. What is good for the goose is good for the gander.
Don't get me wrong. I believe in absolute truth and that sin is sin. I also believe that it does no good to beat someone up with scripture, especially if they don't believe. I figure I have enough sin in my life to deal with that I don't need to worrying about the sin in other people's lives. Besides, being mean or rude only serves to drive a wedge between us. If someone is to ever see Christ living in me, I figure driving wedges isn't the place to start.
So, while I may personally not believe two men getting married is the right thing to do, it doesn't hurt anyone. It isn't even one of the big ten(11) and I believe I could be breaking the second greatest commandment by doing otherwise. Heh, the way many Christians treat this issue, it could actually even be considered idolatry because it almost seems more important to them than God.
So I say let them marry and don't cause anyone harm.
Willy...you act is if you do not subscribe to moral relativity
So obviously still in the closet......
S-I-C-K !!!
You are right, can our society get any sicker?
When we are more worried about something that causes no harm to anyone than we are about a child starving then we've gone about as low as we can go. So, maybe we can't.
I guess that makes Comics pretty musch "SUCK"!
What a load of crap. Get back in the closet so we can nail that door shut.
Just a way to perpetuate the stereotype of grown men living in mom's basement reading comic books – they are surely gay deviants. I've seen the way comic book guy looks at Bart Simpson!
To be gay implies intimate activity, something that would surely be odd for some superheros and their mates. I mean, a "quickie" with the Flash is pretty much a given, right?
Keep your cattle in the corale. Relax, people, they get divorced in the next issue.
NOT GOING TO RELAX....GOING TO BAN MARVEL COMICS AND BEGIN TO FIGHT POLITICALLY. RELIGIOUS FREEDOM IS AT STAKE HERE...AND NEEDS TO BE TAKEN VERY SERIOUSLY. THE GAY COMMUNITY ARE TRYING TO CHANGE LAWS THAT WILL CHANGE ALL FORMS OF FREEDOM IN THIS GREAT COUNTRY, THAT IS DIFFERENT THAN FIGHTING DISCRIMINATION....NO, THEY WANT THE WHOLE PIE...AND WE NEED TO STAND UP AND FIGHT. THE NEXT STEP WILL BE TO MAKE IT ILLEGAL FOR A CHURCH – NOT TO MARRY THEM.....RIGHT? BELIEVE ME – THAT IS WHERE THIS IS GOING. I DO NOT HATE ANYONE....NOR DO I WANT TO SEE ANYONE BULLIED OR DEPRIVED OF HUMAN RIGHTS. BUT WHEN A KID CANNOT GO TO SCHOOL WITH A SHIRT THAT SAYS JESUS LOVES ME....WE ARE ALREADY IN DEEP WATER. GOD LOVES EVERY SOUL ON THIS PLANET – BUT I WILL NEVER LOOK UP AT HEAVEN AND TELL GOD HE HAS MADE A MISTAKE IN HIS ORIGINAL INTENTION FOR THE HUMAN RACE. MARRIAGE IS FOR A MAN AND A WOMAN. I HAVE THE RIGHT TO FREE SPEECH – BUT THAT IS IN JEOPARDY RIGHT NOW AS WE SPEAK. STAND UP AND FIGHT FOR RELIGIOUS FREEDOM BECAUSE IT IS HANGING BY A THIN THREAD
Man, you sound like the kind of narrow-minded thumper who will have to die off from natural causes before this country (WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL) gets its head out of the 1950's and on track.
Religious freedom, in a sense of those words, or true enlightenment and pure spirituality?
I don't see where religious freedom is in danger here. Pastors are not currently required to marry anyone just because they ask, so pastors can turn down gay weddings too.
Your comment was the dumbest thing written on the internet today.
LOL YOU... ARE... SO... annoying.
What about the religions that already perform gay marriages? Shouldn't their marriages be recognized by the government like everyone else? Is that not religious discrimination?
Ladies and gentlemen, a fine example of Poe's Law at work! Can't tell whether this is a real fundie or just someone parodying a fundie? Neither can anyone else, there's no difference anymore;
I have to agree...people do not understand how one step leads to another. Gays marrying is NOT just about that issue, IT'S WHAT COMES NEXT!!!!!!!!!! RELIGIOUS FREEDOM, FREEDOM OF SPEECH, ARE WE GOING TO LOSE THOSE?? LOOK AT THE COUNTRIES THAT HAVE LOST THOSE, IS THAT WHAT PEOPLE WANT!!! Are we going to become North Korea before people wake up!!! Why are people so daft, it's unbelieveable.
With all that SHOUTING have you taken your Valium today?
Please explain to me how legalizing gay marriage will cause us not to have freedom of religion or freedom of speech!? That is the dumbest argument I have ever heard! Get off the bandwagon and think for yourself for once! If you haven't noticed, which wouldn't be surprising giving your lack of intilect and self thinking, these people are for freedom of religion and freedom of speech. They are for all freedom!
You preach freedom and how it will be taken away from you, but what you ignorantly don't understand is that we are asking for those SAME FREEDOMS. I love these 3rd world ideals that you guys have. You couldn't even explain rationally how allowing gays the same rights as others will cause all this devistation as you claim it will. Get real...
Gosh, North Guy, your paranoia is showing.
The last thing I need to read is that someone is gay
YAwn, this crapola is getting VERY boring. ENOUGH ALREADY!!! If they want to marry, go for it, but for goodness sakes, SH U T UP ALREADY! VEry sick of hearing about gay this and gay that. What are they, 5% of the population?
Jesus is the answer. He is the ONLY way to the Father in Heaven. Believe in the Lord Jesus Christ, repent, obey and be saved!
Does Jesus believe in comics????
if god is like you, i want nothing to do with him.
Days of Lot!!! Days of Noah!!!
The Hulk could kick Jesus's bum any day of the week.
Yeah, look what he did to Loki!
I agree Dan
God made gay people.
God also made Hitler, Stalin and HIV. What is your point, moron?
Willy....you are an annoying little freak
If Jesus does not obey the laws of common sense, I will never, ever obey Jesus Christ.
Saved from the temper tantrum of the virgin boinker?
No Buddha is the answer. No Mohammed is the answer. No Brahma is the answer. No Zeus is the answer. Oh hell maybe they're all fairy tales.
The new super hero is equiped with Mrs. Clairol grenades and twin oversized hair dryers.
Gays should really look into conversion therapy. It has a proven track record of curing gays. The liberal media tries to downplay the effectiveness of conversion therapy but you will never know it you try it. However, since many gays do not seek to correct their defective behavior I will have to conclude they choose to be gay. Conversion therapy is not about praying the gay away. They use many different methods like electroshock therapy to help gays get normal.
Troll.
If you really love God, why the hatred and the lies? There is no evidence that conversion therapy works – indeed, there is evidence that it is harmful. People should be left alone rather than abused by "Christians!"
It is people like you and your obvious lack of understanding that turn people away from your God. I want nothing to do with a God that persecutes his creations, and tells others to persecute them as well, for making them the way he did. You are all a sad example of humanity, and i pity you.
How does their belief and practice affect your life? Aren't we supposed to be tolerant and just turn away if we disagree? Methinks you could use a dose of your own medicines Mr. Mouth.
Outside of the LGBT agenda, where is "tolerance" a virtue? I shouldn't have to be forced to accept anything that I find morally reprehensible!
"I shouldn't have to be forced to accept anything that I find morally reprehensible!"
Really? I find bigotry morally represhensible. I do not advocate that bigots be denied civil rights.
reprehensible.
you don't have to accept it. you can hold your breath until you turn blue, you can take a step off the roof of a very tall building, you can insert your sidearm into your mouth for all i care. but you cannot deny people equal rights.
Being gay is absolutely NOT a choice. Who would choose a life to be taunted at made fun of. Just as you find gays abnormal, I find your way of thinking and especially about electric shock therapy abnormal. If you can turn a gay man straight with electro shock therapy you should be able to turn a straight man gay too with the same method. See how silly that sounds?
Gays that "turn" straight are brainwashed and in total denial.
...or commit suicide from depression. That must make a few zealots happy...
UHHH Really. That is the bigest logic fail ever. There are all sorts of choices people make that cause just that. I guess 1st centurary christians were born that way because no one would choose a lifestyle where you are made fun of. How about Goths, Emos, ect.. The all choose to be such things.
I am gay and I was not born that way. I learned to like boys after a few pleasant experiences with older men when I was younger. Most of my friends have a similar background. Almost nobody I know thinks they were "born that way." We recognized what we liked as we came to experience it.
Some are abused or don't fit in very well and are accepted with open arms by the Gay community. It doesn't mean that all Gay people choose, but I have met some that did choose.
Interestingly enough pedophiles make your same argument and yet I chose not to "tolerate" them. Because I have an urge to do something doesn't make that urge ok or morally acceptable. I have urges to sleep with women who are not my wife. I chose not to listen to those urges as I know that's not the best or moral choice to make. People have immoral urges all day every day and we chose not to do them. So what about you? Do you tolerate pedos? If they are born that way you have some issues to consider.
Maybe you should look into therapy for your own messed up views.
Electroshock "therapy"??? Seriously???
How do you know that being gay is NOT natural to some folks? Do you speak for god?
This is way beyond gross!!! Next edition will have a man marrying a child, or 5 women at once or may his own sister.....thats where this is heading. Perversion is perversion and to force it on the masses is just wrong....and very maniputative!!! Ban all comics
If Northstar got married to his sister, he would practically be getting married to several women at once since she had frequent personality changes.
And get off my lawn!
Your slippery slope fallacy is precious.
Precious and true. On the back end of this acceptance of transgenders, and employers being forced to pay for the weeners getting lopped off.
"This is way beyond gross!!! Next edition will have a man marrying a child, or 5 women at once or may his own sister....." I think that's the Bible that you're describing.
I'm done with Marvel. This agenda preaches it's okay, and it is not. Let's see them have kids.......NOT – If the square peg dpesn't fit in the round hole, why are we forcing the issue? Just because how somebody feels? I don't deny how somebody feels, but that doesn't mean it's right.
You're so full of hatred, bigotry, intolerance, spite. You should educate yourself and join the 21st century.
Signed,
Liberals with a gay agenda.
finally ... someone being honest about their agenda ... wish cnn would be instead of finding one 'gay' story a day to put on for news
I didn't know DarthVader was gay... Suppose it explains why he tends to get with guys and start whacking their "lightsabers" together.......
Choosing not to agree with someone's redefintion of marriage is in no way biggoted or intolerant. People have bent over backwards to make room for gays the last ten years. If gays didn't try to rewrite the definition of marriage we wouldn't be having this discussion.
Kids now are very lucky. They have hero's and role models that simply were not around for my generation. GLBT kids need superheroes just like other children and its nice to see that they have some.
I hope they have the character talk with a lisp..
he should ... talking with a lisp – all of a sudden magically and being flamboyant is genetic too don't you know.
That is hilarious!!! lmao!
Super hero in the city of Sodom..
Please give me the quote from genesis where in the story of sodom it says that the city was destroyed for gay s3x
well, that fact that it seemed ok with the genreal populace that men went around openly raping other men gives us some clue about the depravity of america, er ... i mean sodom
Where does it say rap1ng?
Jude 1:7 “Even as Sodom and Gomorrha, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.”
Gen 19:5 “And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, Where are the men which came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them."
I really don't understand why so many people are concerned about children reading this comic book. Most children don't like to read comics, or read at all for that matter.
Gay superhero????....Hulk smash.
You are aware of the other definition that "smash" is used for. Hulk not gay
hulk would be a very scary gay hero .... reminds me of eddie murphy's mr t impression ... "hey boy, hey boy ...' haha
LOL, lots of sore rearends in the Marvel Universe were The Hulk gay.........
just an observation, but aren't most superheros already kind of gay? at least in appearance? this isn't news. all of you grew up obsessing over men in tights wrestling each other for the greater good.. pretty gay. the wedding is arbitrary
I can't believe this, why doesn't Marvel ever have any straight marriages, only gay ones? Oh wait, they do, Cyclops and Jean Grey, Peter Parker (Spider-man) and Mary Jane, Reed Richards (Mr Fantastic) and Susan Storm (Invisible Woman, Vision and Scarlet Witch (look it up), not to mention the many, many straight relationships. Its not brainwashing, get over it. And good for a character whose book I have never read anyway...good for him
Yep, and all those were boring unnecessary story arcs as well!!
Now Vision and Scarlet Witch, that was controversial. He's not even a living being.
Will he change his superhero name to "Gayman?" Will his but whistle when he flies? If it does, he won't be able to sneak up on the villians.
Good one!!!
Ohy, parents, if you don't want your kid to read the book...be a parent and don't buy it for them.
Sending all my luck to Liu. I don't read Astonishing, but I'll pick these issues up. Happy to support this cause.
And isn't Perkins art on this? Guy was on the news (to include CNN) a year ago with the "death" of Johnny Storm. That guy's got some serious luck when it comes to the high-profile stories!
Not to be outdone, next week the Spongebob Squarepants cartoon will introduce a new character that is a gay, black, transgender, muslim, socialist octopus. It will be called Shocktopus.
But you secretly want them to call him "Obama."
Obama – christian and straight by day .... muslim and gay by night
...and handicapped by way of a missing tentacle
I normally buy about 10 Marvel issues a week, and have been buying more lately because of AvX. However, this issue just lost them a week of sales. I will not support them in this and I'll just have a gap in my collection. I'm fine with g.ay people, I'm even fine with g.ay marriage, but I don't want to see it in my comics. There is no reason to include it in the story except for political purposes. I will not pay my money to further someone's political agenda. So, I'll just take a week off from buying my favorite Marvel comics and spend the money on other books. 'nuff said, true believers!
You and your closed heart will not be missed. How can you say you're ok with it then say something like that? Only closet cases go to tard extremes like you just did.
But the issue when Clark & Lois got married was just fine. Hypocrite.
NOPE, that one sucked too!
Clark and Lois are classic characters that people had been waiting decades to see married. Same with Spidey and MJ, Cyclops and Jean, etc.. It was part of the story, not just something thrown in there for "shock and awe" or to promote an agenda.
According to the author, the issue is about love not politics. If you have no problem with gays or gay marriage, then to you this shouldn't actually be a political statement.
The gay superhero will kill his enemies by biting his enemy and patiently waiting for the HIV virus to do its work .
Did you know more straight people have AIDS than gay people?? I guess Rush didn't tell you that...
Your argument is rubbish Admit it... There are more straight people with AIDS simply because there are many more straight people. If you look at the percentages per group, you'll see that the gay group has a way higher percentage of AIDS infected people, which is very sad.
It's not numbers of people, it's percentages that tell the story.
Darth, you are correct. This mostly due to the first known HIV infected individual in the US happened to be gay and quite promiscuous. It's interesting that one of the main problems people have with gay men in particular is promiscuity, but at the same time, they are fighting tooth and nail to keep gay men from marrying, which, theoretically, would reduce promiscuous behavior.
You're an idiot.
Two problems with your comment:
1) "HIV virus" is redundant
2) HIV is not present in sufficient amounts in saliva to infect another person
Please get educated before you type.
Jen, it's a well known fact that Northstar eats tortilla chips for breakfast, and it's not uncommon for him to cut his gums.
Lol at the redundancy jennifer but the 2nd one doesnt work. Its a comic book. Anything is possible.
Actually OMY, according to prior books, mutants are immune to HIV, so I guess in this case, anything isn't possible.
Why is this news?
because CNN attempts to stir the pot constantly.
Because you clicked on it.
LOL you're right
But they won't be doing it in ANY state that has allowed WE THE PEOPLE to VOTE on it!
That's true. It's also true, that if they left it up to vote, the slaves would not have been freed, and blacks and women would have never gotten the right. Sometimes the majority is wrong.
Disagree. Slavery ended because the people VOTED for an anti slavery president and had already ended the practice in the North. It was a matter of time.
Actually, Lincoln was a moderate regarding slavery. Originally, he did not want to abolish slavery, he just wanted to keep it from expanding to new states and territories.
Really? "We the people" voted in favor of gay marriage and governor fatso vetoed it.
I hate to tell you this, but WE THE PEOPLE includes gay and lesbian Americans, too. What gives YOU the right to vote on THEIR lives?
And vice versa, right?
You don't vote on civil rights.
Lol, a gay superhero! REALLY???
man .. where will we be 50 years from now ..
Pushing up daisies that's where I'll be. If not then sitting in a old folks home drooling
Why does CNN have these stupid comments sections anyway? Like someone with an opposing can change anyone's mind? No, they are full of comments from racists, bigots, idiots, immature people who are so ignorant that they can't spell, let alone, think for themselves, and radical religious freaks that DONT SHUT THE H E L L UP! These comment sections are really stupid and I had to finally say something because it is just getting out of hand. NO ONE CARES ABOUT YOUR OPINION no matter what side of the fence you are on. CNN PLEASE JUST POST THE NEWS AND STORIES AND LET YOUR READERS KEEP THEIR OPINIONS AND REMARKS TO THEMSELVES!
Unless they support gay rights, of course. We don't want everyone to be silent, because then who would be shouting in favor of our views?
Hi BriSoFla, thank you for your comment. My name is Nicole Saidi, and I am the comments producer/rounder-upper around here. You have asked an excellent question.
We've seen amazing discussions pop up on unexpected topics, so we try not to make too many presumptions about what people will say. It's true, readers don't always or often agree about things, especially when it comes to topics that are so closely related to personal values and beliefs. You can see that there is a rather spirited discussion taking place here; with matters like these, the secret to commenting well is to remember that it's not just about what you say, but how you say it. We do hope people will take a moment to express themselves respectfully. We'll be listening.
That's the sad thing here. The posts get too personal when posting an opposing view. After all the disrespect I've seen on several forums today, I almost agree. I originally saw posts as a way to broaden my way of thinking by seeing the views of others. However, today I'm simply reminded that bigotry and ignorance are runing more rampant than ever these days...
Wait a minute, you create a post to urge that posting be stopped? I think you might have some bad stuff.
Marvel Comics? More like FABULOUS COMICS!!!!
Love it.
Boycott Marvel comics. Do not brainwash children with this, this kind of politics is not needed in cartoon. Stick to the action and not the romance.
Brainwash? Do you think reading about a gay character makes you gay?
I have never read a comic book, but this makes me want to head to the nearest comic book store and start collecting today!
"Do not brainwash children with this, this kind of politics is not needed in cartoon."
It's desperately needed... The only way you know how to raise children is with hatred and intolerance... Someone has to teach them to be productive human beings and this is one of the many avenues toward that end. This would be unnecessary if you weren't such a bad parent.
U make a lot of assumptions. What kids, I am a kid. LOL.
"Stick to the action and not the romance."
That line in your original post signifies a mental problem. You should seek help immediately if you ever want to have a healthy romantic life.
Parenting by comic book? You are kidding, right?
"Parenting by comic book? You are kidding, right?"
That's a very typical, mindless question from a conservative... Completely unable to see the big picture, just willing to focus on your own bigotry. No wonder the South is such a wasteland.
Dr. Joseph Goebbels agrees with you.
STFU YOU ARE A MOR-ON LAUREN! LETS ROUND UP ALL BIGOTS LIKE YOU LAUREN AND THAT HATEFUL PLACE YOU CALL A CHURCH WITH AN ELECTRICFIED FENCE AND SEE HOW YOU LIKE IT.
Don't go to church, not a bigot or moron, not old, not uneducated. Just leaving a comment as everyone else. Just because this is my opinion does not mean it comes from hate. Obviously you would not understand because apparently there is only one way to think.
Ah, it's always lovely to read comments from the tolerant left...Lauren, you just keep going with whatever opinions you are forming in your life experiences – it's exactly the same way the rest of us have developed opinions. You go, girl!
I thought you were above commenting and were leaving or something??
Oh the dumb get dumber
Maybe somebody should boycott your parents for having you.
Boycot the Bible. Don't brainwash children with hate for other people.
...and the Koran and the Tora and while we're at it Scientology
Bible doesn't teach hate...God hates the sin not the sinner.
Just another day on QNN. Gay gay, every day.
We were warned about this long time ago by Rev Falwell. They will seek to influence our kids by promoting the gay lifestyle as a trendy and better way to live. This is one of the many recruiting tools they will use to convert our kids and as parents we will have to be vigilant or else it will be too late. Don't let your kid turn into a sodomite.
Jake31 – Being gay is not a lifestyle, it is an orientation. Additionally, the only gay agenda that I know of is legal equality.
" Don't let your kid turn into a sodomite."
In other words, don't take him to church.
You m o r o n, you don't recruit gays. That would be like a black person recruiting whites to change color. They want equal rights. That's all.
You protest too much! They don't want equal rights, they want everyone to embrace them as if this were the norm. Do you know what they want, they want power, once they have it they will make fun of the others because they are straight.
Have you ever actually dealt with this group of people? Most difficult, full of issue and very demanding.
I would take Lauren a lot more seriously if her posts were written in correct English.
"...they want everybody to embrace this as if it were the norm." Yep, they just want to be accepted, and for people to realize that it is "normal."
There has never been nor will there ever be a black person that stopped being black because they quit doing some thing. I think you just showed us why "gay" and black are not the same.
Oh crap, I'm late for my gay agenda meeting. I think recruitment is today's topic.
Yup – we put it at the top of the agenda. We realized that giving toaster ovens for the recruitment of 5 or more people to the gay community wasn't working well anymore. Actually, we may stop recruiting because so many people want to be like us....its just not as exclusive of a club as it once was 🙂
Good for Marvel Comics for taking a stand against discrimination and showing that all people deserve legal equality.
"Gay breeding ground". I C WUT U DID THAR.
I hope you were trolling, but sadly, you probably weren't..
Oh man. Was having a rough start to my day and the comments on this article are making me laugh so hard I think I peed a little! Thanks to all that are not taking this so serious and having fun with it...which is the whole point of a comic book! 🙂
"Nuff Said..."
Change is coming all right!!
Politics and comic books are two things that should not be mixed. Stop trying to brain wash my children into believing in what you believe. Leave our children out of your messed up lives.
Comic Books have done this since WWII. And you do know that the average comic book reader is an adult, right? Have you ever heard of Dust? She's my favorite X-Man (or would it be woman, lol), and she was created in response to the initial start of the 2002 Afghanistan War. She wears an Abaya, and is adamant that she covers herself not because of Taliban Oppression, but because she observes Islamic Hijab; which means dressing modestly in terms of Sharia Law. Also: Sharia Law has been tainted due to GOP misinformation.
Sorry, but Sharia law is tainted because of it's source material: the Qur'an and the Hadith.
If Dust followed sharia law, she would have Northstar and his partner put to death for being gay.
If your child is gay, he's already gay. A comic is not going to turn him gay.
People aren't born gay. Who told you that?
Most scientists and doctors believe being gay is biological in nature if not genetic.
Joel, not most. Just a few, but the media likes to say it's most. Don't believe everything CNN says.
Darth, open up the vents on your helmet. You aren't geting enough oxygen.
People are born gay. It isn't learned behavior. It isn't a choice.
" Leave our children out of your messed up lives."
You're talking to Christians, right?
Must be nice to poke the very group of people that worked tirelessly to build this free nation and give you free speech right in the eye with it, huh?
It's called a free country. You're just as free to thump your Bible and try to "brainwash" our kids into your backwardness.
Politics and comic books have ALWAYS been mixed. Your selection has just been limited, is my guess. Comic books are a strong forum for diversity of opinion and always have been, barring a bit of time during McCarthyism.
You know, the thing that kills me about all this "don't write gay characters! don't write this or that or blah blah blah!" stuff is that people are actually commenting that they would like other people's rights to free speech infringed. For goodness' sake, if you don't like to read it, DON'T READ IT! Quit calling for authors and creators to censor their right to free speech just for your ease and comfort.
They can write whatever they want. Deal with that; it's called reality. It's also reality that you can censor what comes into your home. If you don't like the comic, then just plain don't buy it. Quit telling people not to write them; it's pointless and silly.
Gee, I guess that means you wouldn't have let your kids read all those Golden Age comics where Captain America punched out Hitler, right? Those were nothing but propaganda, and we all know we have to shield the little children from such horrors!
*snark OFF*
WOW Joe, it's pretty obvious you've not read many comic books in your life time.
Politics have ALWAYS been a part of comic books.
Buy War bonds kids, because Superman says to!!!
All those special Spider-Man comics about why Smoking is bad, Comics with Superman and the issues with land minds, Batman and animal abuse, etc.
This is no different.
If you don't want your kids to EVER be influenced by an outside source then you need to write EVERYTHING for your children and never let them pick up a book or watch a tv show or movie ever again!
The only thing I know is that GOD! is not please with this mess!!! And, about the children? Dozen anyone care? I'm sick right about now!! If you see the devil messing with our children minds. I guest you all don't any more children coming into the world!! Man with Man & Women with Women..OMG!! I feel like crying.. Our children are going to be watching this on TV. I can't believe you people think that this nice..To hell will you lift up your eyes!!!!! Father help us. In the name of JESUS!!!!!! Lord, this country needs you GOD! Please help this world.....
While you're at it God, can you please help the American education system? "Dozen?" Really???
OR English may not be this persons first language. Way to be sensitive dude. Advocate gay rights and poke fun at "illiterates". Keep fighting that good fight brother.
You're about to get destroyed by all the liberals for sharing your opinion. 🙂
While I certainly disagree with her opinion, it is her right to have it. What I really have a problem with is her complete ignorance of the english language. The post is almost unreadable.
Joel
You are really blazing the path of tolerance and acceptance of persons that differ from you. Hypocrite much?
OH SUZIE, WON'T SOMEONE THINK OF THE CHILDREN?!
Amen. To that.
Suzie – God loves all of His children, gay and straight. I pray that God may open your mind so you may accept your brothers and sisters as they are.
Yes, God loves everybody, murderers, liars, adulterers, gay people. What He does not love is their sin. You people just refuse to understand that.
Cindy, there are no gods. They simply don't exist, and never have. Just like comic-nook heroes, they are fiction. Try a dose of reality every once in a while
cindy: you have no authority to speak for god
Dough-nuts,
Don't hate those with religious beliefs. Isn't hate the problem? Or is it just when people hate what you like? Hypocrite.
Same old Christian B.S. Created sick and commanded to be well, on pain of eternal torture no less. Such a loving God we humans decided to make up.
The issue is not her having the opinion...the issue is the psychotic nature in which is expresses her opinion...
Suzie – how do YOU know what God is thinking? Did God personally tell you? If so, I think you missed you pills this morning.
Try lithium. It could really help you with the voices in your head.
Suzie: You have no authority to speak for god
Comic books are about fantasy, so this fits right in the narrative.
That's just gay!
I'd be perfectly alright with being born gay if I was also born with super powers that were awesome. Fair trade, I say. Hell, I'd be REALLY OK with it if I was born a WOMAN, too. Sounds like fun!
Yippee.
This is going to be a best seller. I bet it's action packed! I hope they include the honeymoon! Northstar is gonna go ragtime on that other dude.
i heard the honeymoon is being held on uranus
Haha. What's Northstar's superpower anyway? Mega-thrust? Fisting Fury? The power of interior design?
sources say that the best mnn is supersucker and the maid of honor, superfudge
This wedding keeps getting better and better. I hope there's an open bar. I'd get completely faced and start putting the moves on Storm instantaneously. After party at "The Loading Dock"!!
Wow, these comments make me kind of sick. Marvel has always focused on major issues. The X-men have always represented equal rights. If you read this comic and don't like gay marriage, just skip the issue. No big deal.
In any case, it appears that a lot of commenters do not even read comics so I don't see why they're complaining. Superheroes don't get married? How about Peter Parker and MJ or Mr. Fantastic and Invisible Woman? I think it's fair to allow a gay superhero to marry as well. As someone else already pointed out, Runaways did this years ago.
Otherwise, keep your prejudices to yourself. If you're against other people getting married to those they love, maybe someone should prevent you from doing the same. We're in America. I thought we were for equality.
In the 6 or 7 decades Marvel has been in existence, how many weddings have you seen? I can remember the 2 you've mentioned, but, I'm drawing a blank on any more. 2 in 70 years is such a rash of straight marriages that all gay people should just be shocked and offended.
I'm for gay marriage. I'm all for a different kind of love over a different kind of hate. Though, all the "Oooo! Look at me! Look at me!" press is getting old.
Scott Summers got married a couple of times, didn't he?
Oh, and going by the storylines, Spider-Man and Mary Jane's wedding never took place after they did a time rewrite. Google is your friend.
You're wrong. That was not a retcon by Marvel, that marriage never happened because Spiderman made a deal that changed history in order to save her life. Also, there are quite a few married heroes in comics. No they haven't shown all of their weddings, but they only show weddings that have historic significance, and this one certainly does.
Not wrong, I just didn't elaborate. I condensed the thought as it sounded really geek explaining the deal. Boiled down, it was still just a rewrite. Jeez, how often do you count out your dice bag?
No dice. I just read comics. Not that I have any problems with those who do play RPGs.
I see the typical bigoted comments towards gay people are being tossed around – not surprised.
I thought the third X-Men movie, "The Last Stand", touched on a subtle correlation between being mutant and being gay...though it wasn't necessarily shown specifically in the movie.
They had found a "cure" for mutants that would make them "normal". And even some of the dialogue, if you changed up the context slightly, could really have been conversations about what gay people deal with in society instead of what mutants deal with.
I've always felt the mutant aspect of the X-Men series was a creative way of illustrating what people in society who are considered "different" have to deal with due to the irrational fear of others.
Funny how you guys put a question mark in the headline, it's a fact. not a question. It's kinda like you're questioning gay marriage as a whole.
This coming from a straight guy .
Xmen was written first to help the cause of racism during hte 50s-60s-70s. Give or take a couple of years there. So, I understand it is getting a bit annoying hearing about g.ays all the time now; but who cares. Let them get married and you won't have to hear about it anymore. Xmen helped promote the anti-racism that followed that era, maybe it will help with this anti-human era we are in now.
If you complain thats fine, but you should be use to fairytales–you read the bi.ble don't you?
AWESOME point! When you pay close enough attention to the people who belong to any version of Christianity, you can really begin to see that the bible is like their comic book.....and they believe Jesus was the first superhero! 🙂
Awsome point as well!
Yes they should address the discrimination Gays have faced for so long... not being allowed to vote, forced to sit at the back of the bus, separate toilets, water fountains and schools and having been bought and sold for their masters pleasure. They don't want equal rights... they want exclusive rights.
You hit the nail on the head!!!
I'm confused. What exclusive right do gay people want? The right to marry the person they love? Straight people defnitely cannot do that.
Boo hoo, jedi. If you don't like the comparison, don't read the comments section. STFU and GTFO.
Oh, I don't know – perhaps the exclusive right to expect others to think the way they do and support them in their lifestyle choices...or else.
@Jay No one is trying to make anyone think anything. Everyone has the right to believe what they want. It is when you try to limit other's rights that people get upset.
How about the right to not get beat up leaving a bar? Sure, there was a time when black people had to sit on the back of the bus or drink from a separate drinking fountain – but in the end the worst atrocities were the lynchings and cross burnings. How about a little empathy for someone who for years never felt comfortable walking down the street holding his boyfriends hand for fear someone would start a fight?
Yes, they want the exclusive right of being able to marry the consenting adult that also wants to marry them. Something that no-one else has.
Does "Loving v. Virginia" ring a bell?
how are they exclusive rights?
very smart you are....!
Agree more I couldn't This agenda isnt about Love....it's about benefits, tax breaks etc...
always thought comics were gay
Indeed!
Gay superhero .....why not.. maybe it will help some young kid build a better sense of himself as an achiever, but you can look around you, many of today's successes are gay and more will be coming out because of our wonderful president. Make some more changes for us POTUSBO, the Christians aren't quite "fighting" mad .....I'm ready for their negative influence into politics and mankind's SLOW-volution to be OVER.
Well said!
you do know the northstar is one of the lamest superheroes, right?
and yet he exists ...must be a reason eh?
What you're saying thnat 'our wonderful president" isn't one of the christains he proclaims to be? News to me. If a comic book hero being gay is that important to a kid's self esteem then he has bigger problems to worry about.
in other words Obama is leading ALL his people ......which include "real" Christians. I shouldn't have to explain the meaning of "real".
I might want to think about buying one of those could be worth some serious money in about 100 yrs.
"you mean they really called people names?!" newly adopted Sarah asked of both her dads, as she was getting ready to visit with her 2 mom(s).
Hey Christians................BOO!
or maybe in a 100 hundred years they'll say ... wow ... yuck, can't believe two dudes actaully did that
What I shouldn't have to say Mrs cleaver is I admire Obama he is more than his religion as all men should be. True Christianity believes in "change" so by the very definition means to lead your people UP and away from "common" thought forms (Judgement) that are rampant. Jesus was an esoteric as few where at that time, and he too had to deal with "common" thought forms" he told you not to judge for a reason.... he also told you to CHANGE he did not say REPENT <- this is an intentional change to the bible when the word Metanoia was changed from its Greek translation by the Council of Trent. They don't want you to do your own communication with god, you have to seek a priest to absolve you of all sin, can you say Cha-Ching for the church.
your truly have no clue what jesus said, right? try reading the bible and not just picking your ideas up from bloggers
do you want the "common" version held by today's 24/7 christian with instant forgiveness on Sunday? ->or<- do you want me to waste your reading time telling you something YOU wouldn't understand? the answer is yes, I do know what Jesus said, or what was written down and translated several ways from Sunday" ....and I know the traditional popular translations .... as I am have been studying 53 yrs. The "real answer" would just shock you and your are not ready for it. this is why "many will be called and few will be chosen" ... so as Jesus said I will not caste my perils before swine....
God and the Bible are the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. Neither changes with the sick world we live in.
Not really necessary. No kid buys comics for this kind of narrative. It wont sell comics.
excuse me bibleverse1
.... Gay children will love to have a superhero just like any straight child ...but one that "represents" them even at stage of life. When gay becomes a OPEN choice then the need for a stereotypes can wane until then its a good idea. We have to start somewhere.
Interestingly, when I read comic books I wasn't looking for someone who would "represent" me – it was fun escapism, nothing more. It must be nothing short of exhausting to analyze every situation, person, and inanimate object looking for validation, representation, etc. I wouldn't be able to stand it, and I feel for anyone who looks at the world and says "if everyone would just think the way I do, I would finally be happy". It's heartbreaking, really, because that will just never happen, regardless of how militant the arguments get.
That's the thing, kids aren't into comics anymore. Still pictures with narrative to read?? BORING!
They would rather play on their iPad that mommy used child support to pay for. You can once again thank your government for their welfare handouts, that really ends up buying Chinese crap recipients could live without.
Waaaa! I'm in FIFTH GRADE and mommie wont buy me a cell phone! WAAAAA!
You truly, truly are not good at trolling.
funny thing is if this was Wonderwoman getting in a drunken jello wrestling match with Supergirl it would be the top-selling issue of all time..........
but seriously what kid buys superhero comics to read about any kind of wedding..be it gay, straight, human/alien, robot/mutant monkey..
40 year old kids.
And that is the real problem – adults who won't grow up. Personally, I probably have a bit more respect for someone who's 40 and gay than I would for someone who's 40 and reads comic books; however, someone who's 40, gay, AND reads comic books is a prime target for jeering.
Out of curiosity, what are your interests?
I'm guessing he's into fantasy-sports. You know, D&D for people with no imagination.
Great comment, and so true!
Great. A super flamer just what we need. I bet he gets a case of super aids
jim – Stop the hate.
Why do you think the Human Torch always said "Flame On"?
Actually, Jim – please continue. That was hilarious.
has anyone else caught on to the term ex men? these 2 definately fit the bill...
gross
People are upset about what a fictional character in a comic book does? This is the definition of 'pathetic loser'.
And they wonder why I didn't join the X-Men.
worse..you joined Cable......
You did not join the main XMen, but you did join Wolverine'sl XForce assassination squad. You also decided to wear Jean Greys skirt outfit around the Xmansion once.... there are pictures to prove it!
I guess North Star will be hitting the brown star. I'm glad I quit reading comics a long time ago. They will probably make a movie about this.
OK, I will never buy another Marvel Comic ever again. When I read comics the super heros stood for all that was good and right with America, this does not portray, America, Comics, Stan Lee or our society in a favorable light. Shame, Shame, nothing but Shame.
Really? When you read comics they portrayed heroes in a favorable light? What about all the times Batman got some kid killed? Or How about all the Heroine Green arrows sidekick did? Or how about this:
http://superdickery.com/images/stories/dick/1027_4_115.jpg (Superman is a dick)
I highly doubt you know the first thing about comics.
and i bet you know too much about them .... put down the comics and move out of your parent's basement, please!
Sailor101 – This comic book does stand for all that is good in America – Equality for all.
no sailor 101, you are what is and always has been wrong about america. shame on you.
what's being gay got to do with superheroes? Just because we have it in real life? Because we have it in the military?or is this for marketing purposes? Nothing against the gays. Entertainment has embraced it for the reality shows, sitcoms etc. But what is the connection of being gay to a superhero? So what if the person is gay or straight? Whats that got to do with saving lives or protecting the society from villains? or is it just to force us to accept things how it is...
"........., but his star fell not long after he came out as a gay man.""
-------------------------
Well, duuhhhhh, of course it did. Gays are in the minority.
The fudge packers are everywhere aren't they...
You would know now wouldn't you...
They usually show up in ug's mirror.
that's the name of the next superhero – superfudge
Idiot.
haha...guess Northstar's compass isn't on true north after all. What a load of crap.
The fanboys don't like chicks in their comics, so this was bound to happen sooner or later. 😉
Really? Do a GIS for "Power Girl" sometime, and see how they don't like chicks in their comic-books.
so gay people are mutant? I am surprise gay groups didn't protest about this...
Did you even read the article?
I thought super-heroes couldn't get married because their wife/husband would always be a target?
That is an unwritten rule that Spiderman disobeyed. It is different when both partners are a super hero.
The Walt Disney Company own's Marvel. They should be ashamed of themselves. What's next? Mickey Mouse tying the knot with Winnie the Pooh? Walt would turn over in his grave.
FYI – Walt was a racist and anti-semite so I his opinion does not count for much.
Walt was a racist and anti-semite?? Great , now I like him even more. He's probably rolling in his grave. Gays are nothing but defect's of God's design.
defects* <-- fixed it. Apparently God left a defect in your grammar skills, and your idea of Christianity/morality (or whatever psuedo Christian religion you follow, judging from your capitilization of God).
And now we know why you got kicked out of the Corps, DishonorableDischarge4Life.
jarhead: you have no authority to speak for god.
Disney and Marvel should be proud that they are not catering to bigots like you.
More like Goofy and Gumbie
Wasn't Walt Disney gay? Also I thought I read somewhere that Magneto and Professor X were lovers before they became enemies.
why does it bother you, petey?
I'm all for marriage equality. Now, I'm not so certain about comics past the age of 8 or 10.
Interesting, considering that a growing number of graphic novels have been getting on the bestseller list (yes, graphic novels are comic books), and stories told about these characters on the big screen have been utter blockbusters. Maybe try picking up an actual book instead of just thinking that they're all for kids.
The Batman books, Daredevil books, very good crime investigations drama, for example.
Thanks for the tip...and when you feel you can take off the literary training wheels and read a book without pictures, you might try Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, he's a pretty good author...
Actually most comics these days are read by adults. The biggest problem facing the industry is getting the young interested in reading.
Exactly – and this sure isn't going to up the numbers...what is with all of this Peter Pan mentality in adults? Creepy.
All the more reason for the Superhero's to go back to fighting crime, not taking up political issues. I wouldn't have read this comic junk as a kid either.
Lets see, comic where Superman takes care of Ahmadinejad and frees the Persion people, or Gay superhero gets married. What is an 8 year old to do......
This comic sounds really gay... Maybe they will run into some trouble finding a scarf at the mall and do battle with the store employees :^))
So then, why didn't the self-proclaimed christians get upset when Muppets showed a wedding scene between Kermie and Miss Piggy? An Inter-species marriage? Shocking. LOL.
Actually, they did.
This is disgusting! Gay's are trying to do anything they can to achieve legitimacy. There is no shortage of people on the left willing to promote this abdominal life style. Please stop assaulting US with these images, and keep your life style in your bedroom.
It's kind of hard to take you seriously when you don't know the difference between "abdominal" and "abominable."
Amen, Vickie!
Shawn, you're a moron.
His spelling is terrible but his point is good and solid.
He meant what he said. That life style makes him sick to his stomach.
Yes, keep those abs to yourselves! I have a better idea, Shawn, why don't you keep your abominable intollerence to yourself.
Because you're so tolerant that you can't stand an opposing viewpoint, right?
It's cool, relax, NorthStar is Canadian.
lol "abdominal" huh? I'm not going to generalize and say that only ignorant, uneducated people openly speak out against gay marriage, but you do seem to be an ignorant, uneducated person speaking out against gay marriage.
Thank you all for the spelling lesson. That still does not change the fact the gay life style is wrong. You can attempt to make those of us willing to speak out appear closed minded. However, in your attempt to silence the majority, who are against gay marriage. You are guilty of the same bigotry you claim others direct at you. My objections are based in my faith. Are saying, I should stop believing what I believe because it's the opposite of your choice. That would be religious bigotry. I will work on my spelling, you work on your moral compass.
Abdominal Lifestyle, ya know? Like, Gay people do lots of crunches
"Abdominal"? I think relationships involve more than just the abdomen.
sailor: no, it is not. this is about equal rights
Hottest comic book scene was when Robin, under some drugs, broke in on Batman in the shower.
Batman and Robin being gay is old news...
But what about the Ambiguously Gay Duo? We don't know for sure about them.
Could have drawn him a bit hunkier.
Better to see two men kissing than stabbing, shooting, beating, killing, dismembering one another. American values are kind of backwards in how they view violence.
Well, these two will be stabbing each other later...
I'm going to go out an a limb and say that if the idea of gay marriage in the X-Men is upsetting to you, then you've missed the entire point of the series.
You'll want to lubricate that limb so it doesn't hurt with you sit on it... happy reading!
The point of the series it to promote the gay agenda? Yeah, I missed that one.....
Northsthtar goesth around sthlappin people and handing out accessories to poorly dressed citizens!
Yourth pronounthing wordsth liketh I woodth
Meanwhile, in Jerk City, DontPretend proves once more just how far we still have to go in battling the scourge of rampant ignorance...
I'm not against gay marriage, at all. However, do we need to see it in every form of media out there? Really, can't there be one medium where gay marriage isn't up in your face?
**can't there be one medium where straight marriage isn't up in your face?
Yep, comic books. How many straight weddings do you see? Troll...
Well said, Freep!
Seriously??? "Straight" marriage is on the DECLINE! It's only in your face when it's being staged for reality tv...and that hardly makes it look appealing...
It's not in your face if you don't read it. Wow. That statement was so intelligent that I said just there. Damn, I'm smart.
No, sorry.
If you actually read comics, you all would know that nearly every book has some gay character. Avengers Academy has two, Astonishing X-Men has several, just as examples. If they are trying to balance the books, keeping the percentage of gays/straights, they are way out of balance. By ratio, there are a substantially bigger number of gays than there are in actual society. Again, I'm not against gays at all, have several friends who are gay (who are as sick of all the press they have been exposed to about gay marriage), but jeez. If you want to be gay, great, though it doesn't grant you any more rights than the average citizen. We, the average populace, know you are there and there would be so much less arguing and conflicts if people weren't out there saying, "I'm GAY, look at me! I'm GAY and you're not looking, you prejudiced bigot!"
Then you clearly don't understand. if gay marriage was seen as normal as straight then there wouldn't be a need for constant media exposure, they don't want special attention; they just the most basic rights the rest of us already have. which is to be happily married and be recognized for it. marriage is something most of us take for granted.
Guest, I understand just fine. Like I said, I"m for gay marriage. I think people who are against it are nuts. HOWEVER, we don't need to see it absolutely everywhere. It's going to be on milk cartons soon, displacing missing kids.
I completely understand where you are coming from, however there is still a lot of hate. Gay marriage is only allowed in a couple states. It isn't accepted yet and there is still a lot of gay bashing and anti-gay propaganda. Just because you and a large number of people have accepted doesn't mean the fight needs to stop. They aren't try to over saturate their supporters, they are trying to reach a larger audience and spread the message. Bravo to Marvel for this.
Guest – "recognized for it." That just it. Marriages that need recognition are not happy marriages. Otherwise you don't need anyone to recognize it but your spouce.
It's all about feeling good and making EVERYONE happy.
It's about blindly looking the other way at REAL problems and creating smoke screens to cloud and confuse the masses.
Cyclops and Jean Grey
Just to name a few off the top of my head...
Superman and Lois Lane
Flash and Linda Park
Lana Lang and Pete Ross
Reed Richards and Sue Richards
Some people's imagination are best kept to themselves.
I’ve been telling the local Christians that for years.
Here Here, Tom.
The problem is they just wont listen.
OH SNAP.
Carolina Dean and Xavin got married years ago in Runaways, and they were both women... Sort of.
whoa whoa top out – according to this article – "... but this is the first time a superhero is tying the knot." Sorry, not accurate. Any comic geek who truly knows his stuff would know that Apollo and the Midnighter from Wildstorm's The Authority series married about 12 years ago. Northstar may be Marvel's first gay superhero to marry but he was not *the* first to marry. Proof here: http://www.gayleague.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2009/03/apollomidnighter0.jpg
"Apollo and the Midnighter from Wildstorm's The Authority series married about 12 years ago"
who? Never heard of Reed and Sue?
I'm gussing now they'll legalize murder too.
If they do.. I know who to come for first Omar.
Can we start with you ?
How very droll...
Yes, that's exactly what they're gonna do. They're also gonna legalize marryingpenguins.
They already have legalized murder, it's called NATO...
Being gay is being a mutant. If they don't choose to be gay then there is something in their genetic code which makes them go against natural humanistic tendencies. So this X-men character is a double mutant...
lol. love it.
We all have genetic differences from one another.... there is no such thing as a exact human. We are a transitional species.. that is the whole point in the story of xmen.
What about batman? isnt he super gay too? I mean robin is a pretty trusty sidekick but cmon, their gaydar is just amazing!
Suddenly comics just got really lame.....
Suddenly?
What are comic books?
Apparently gay reading material?
Apparently your both morons.
Pot Kettle black, Brian?
