Marvel invites you to a Super Marriage

Hello again, fellow comic readers!

This week’s new comic Wednesday pick is Marvel Comics’ “Astonishing X-Men #50,”  a book that promises to generate a bit of controversy.

Spoiler alert! If you don’t want to know the “big deal” about this book, stop reading now and skip to the lower part of the post to see the list of books coming out this week.

Marvel Comics’ mutant character Northstar has not often been a headliner. If all you know about the X-Men is what you've seen in movies starring Hugh Jackman, then you likely don’t know him at all.

That changes with this week's “Astonishing X-Men #50” when Northstar takes center stage and prepares to go from one of the first openly gay superheroes in comics to the first married gay hero at Marvel. That's if his paramour and manager Kyle says yes, of course.

Northstar has had a tumultuous history. He starred in “Alpha Flight,” a long-running and well-remembered series for Marvel in the 80s and 90s, but his star fell not long after he came out as a gay man.

At the time his coming out was a huge development, but since then it has been ignored, played up for positive effect or played almost for laughs, such as a brief period where Northstar was retroactively declared to be an actual fairy. (Seriously, this is a storyline in a comic book you can own.)

“Astonishing X-Men #50” is an easy jumping on point for new readers of the line and has the added bonus of featuring Northstar, an X-Men character that I personally think is great.

He promotes AIDS awareness and mental health, two issues dear to his heart thanks to obstacles faced by his adopted daughter and his sister, respectively.

Earlier this year Archie comics had a same-sex wedding in its books that got a lot of press, but this is the first time a superhero is tying the knot.

I asked Marjorie Liu, the writer of this issue, if the controversy surrounding the Archie marriage figured into the storyline of this book.

“This is a love story and not a political statement,” Liu said. “Gay marriage is legal in New York state, and some of the X-Men who live there just happen to be gay. If they want to get married – well, why not? Not everyone will agree or be happy about it (in our book, and in real life), but that doesn't mean we shouldn't tackle those stories with passion and empathy for both sides.”

Conor Kilpatrick of iFanboy.com believes the issue is a perfect fit for Marvel: “The X-Men have been, from the beginning, an allegory for civil rights, so it makes sense that in a time when gay rights is such a front-burner issue in American society that Marvel Comics would face it head-on with their X-Men characters.”

Marvel Comics first rose to prominence and popularity in the 1960s by more accurately and relevantly reflecting the issues of the day in its stories compared to its competition, DC Comics, so it's no surprise that in 2012 Marvel is taking on the issue of gay marriage.

Axel Alonso, Editor in Chief of Marvel Comics, agrees that this is a natural story for Marvel to tell.

“Marvel Comics are best when they respond to developments in the real world,” he said. “When gay marriage became legal in New York state, it raised a question: Since most of our heroes reside in that state, how would Northstar, the first openly gay character in comics, respond to this development? Would it change his long-term relationship with his partner, Kyle?”

Of course, this weekend at the KAPOW! comic book convention in England, DC Comics co-publisher Dan Didio announced that it would reveal a long-time character to be gay.

Daniel Dean, of Titan Games and Comics in Smyrna, Georgia, says comic readers should think twice before they get furious about the storyline in this book.

“Obviously the big hook is Northstar's potential status as Marvel's first married gay superhero. But for me this is just a major event in the story of a character I think is pretty neat,” Dean said.

It was about time Marvel revisited the issue of Northstar’s sexuality. The issue in which he came out was a big deal but the subject was pretty well glossed over immediately thereafter. For a long while it was as if nothing had happened.

"You had camps of fans that were pretty ticked about both; that is, there were people upset that Marvel had a gay mutant, but there were a ton of people who were more upset that apart from a big pronouncement he wasn't allowed to be gay in the comics,” Dean said.

Despite any disagreement in the X-Men fandom, “the fact that Marvel is making this happen now matters, and I think we all like to read stories which matter whether we agree with them or not,” he said.

There was a time in comics where some horrible disaster that threatened lives was preferable to a “gay” subplot. Now most comic fans can name at least a good half dozen or more gay characters without even thinking about it. More importantly, these characters usually have compelling stories and reasons to exist apart from being "the gay one,"  the same stigma that followed the token black member of many comics in the 40s, 50s, and 60s.

Comic fans have seen this kind of relationship blossom before, in Marvel's Wiccan and Hulkling, for example. This, however, represents a whole new line in the sand for Marvel, and it's an accomplishment unto itself. It's indicative of a completely different way of thinking. That's plenty controversial to some people, but perfectly in line with the message of books like the X-Men.

I hope things work out for the character, but, this being comics, few things work out like the heroes hope in the long run. Either way, I'll be reading.

So, until next week, go forth and read, my people. And the reading will be good!

Is there a comic out there that you really love? Let us know in the comments. We’re always looking for tips on good comics!

Here are some of the comics scheduled to hit the shelves on May 23, 2012. Your local retailer will probably have these and others, so make sure to check with them for more details.

Hi! I know this is sort of off-topic but I needed to ask.
Does running a well-established website such as yours require a lot
of work? I'm brand new to operating a blog however I do write in my journal everyday. I'd like
to start a blog so I can easily share my personal experience and
feelings online. Please let me know if you have any
kind of suggestions or tips for new aspiring blog owners.
    Thankyou!

No matter how much the gay and lesbian community wants to be front and center and accepted, they never will be in the Lords eyes. Their lives are the reasons why the two cities were destroyed in the old testament. It does not matter what we here on earth believe, it is the Lord that judges us and its the Lord who decides our fates in the end.

Yes, and what a vindictive dictator your god is. Telling a father he has to kill one of his sons to prove his loyalty. It creates imperfect beings then sentences them to a lifetime of torment because it was too incompetent to do the job right in the first.

Your god considers women chattel to men and tells slaves to obey their masters rather than seek freedom.

Hey, by the way, are you wearing cotton and polyester clothes? You better change because your god doesn't want you to do that.

What a horrible life you must lead, genuflecting to such a narcissistic being who treats you like dirt. I couldn't imagine leading a life of subjugation to such a horrible being.

wow another ignorant, bigoted person!! KAS....you clearly show your lack of schooling here......

        May 29, 2012 at 10:42 am |
      • KAS

Explain to me how anything I said is ignorant. Everything I said comes straight from the Bible except the narcissistic part, but obviously any being who says you have to put them first has a real narcissistic streak in them.

A father being told to kill his son to prove his loyalty, Geneis 22:5 The reason for this, to prove that Abraham feared god. Nice, real nice.

Creating imperfect beings and having them live a lifetime of torment, Rom 5:12-2. So god screws up and we have to pay the price. Hey, that sounds like what Wall Street does!

Women as chattel, Genesis 3:16, Exodus 21:7-11 and Numbers 30. While we're at it, women had a monetary value of 50 to 60 percent of men, Leviticus 27:3-7 and were never to teach or have authority over men, 1 Timothy 2:11, 12.

Slaves obeying masters rather than seeking freedom, 1 Peter 2:18:25, Colossians 3:22 and Ephesians 6:5. Why should they obey their masters, even unreasonable ones (1 Peter 2:18)? Because your suffering pleases god. Gee, thanks. I'm sure the slaves were happy when they were being whipped because god favored them for enduring their torment rather than seeking freedom.

Wearing clothes of two different materials? Deuteronomy 22:11 and Leviticus 19:19.

So again, tell me where I went wrong? Are these things not written in the bible? Is this not what your god said, and which you have to follow? Or are you going to pick and choose what to follow because I don't think your god would like that.

By the way, do you have kids? If so, have they ever disobeyed you? You might want to take them to your town elders and have them stoned to death, Deuteronomy 21:18-2, especially if they've been a drunkard.

please look up the passages Kas quoted... you might not be able to review a restraint you have not been to but you can all ways look at the menus and READ others reviews, those passages are in your good book you as modern Christians chose to ignore them.

Hey you are preaching to the choir here.....we know the scriptures well....don't need to look them up (aaahhh..) . It is you Magnus who needs to read the bible – then you will be able to quote it and discuss it with understanding....You might get some mileage with people like yourself who do not know anything about the bible.....and just read gay comics....but we know the bible and the context/history of each passage – so do historians and theologins worldwide....

Kas....what I love about messages like yours and most of the other God haters is how you write about Him like He is real. You state He is not real....then say all the bad stuff He does....it's soooo funny to read. I love it...the main thing is we agree He is real right?

What a hateful, judgemental and ignorant bunch of folks you are. I feel sorry for you. You defend your hate as representatives of God, when in reality, you are acting against God. The Bible was not written by God, jesus or any other deity. Written by men to reflect the moral teachings of that day and age. Most of the bible has been incorrectly interpreted, giving hate mongers fodder for their ignorant hateful diatribes. You should be ashamed of yourselves.

Wow Kelly – that was deep!! Trashing our faith does not make it not so......Tell me why do you think that lawyers, judges, scientists, teachers, astrophyicists, and much more are in fact christians......you clearly show by your writing that you do not have a clue about history

where? i can under stand where kelly gets the idea that the bible has been miss interpreted, as the king james version was and interpretation of the saint Gregories version which was a interpretation of the Latin version, which in turn was an interpretation of the Hebrew version, which in turn was an interpretation of the Aramaic version which were in turn interpretation of old men telling stories thousands and thousands of years ago. words used in these original stories don't even have English equivalents.

        May 29, 2012 at 9:32 pm |
      • Grey

Magnus....its like you are reading from some nonbeliever script.....no weight to anything you are saying. Can you read ancient Hebrew? Have you been to Israel? Your and Kellys comments are baseless.....and it would be exausting to write out all that both of you don't know or understand. On many of these pages we have had scholars who are not christians – but have validated the bible and the history behind it – have even admitted that Jesus walked the earth...but they do not agree that He is God....or savior (I know He is).......your comments are baseless one liners – "people wrote it, sooo um we don't agree with it..." Sleep well....hugging your comic book

No matter how much the Christian Fundamentalists want people to think they represent a message of love, everyone can see that it is a lie and that really all they have to offer is a message of hatred and intolerance. And when they die and there is no Heaven and no reward for living their life of selfishness and small-mindedness as commanded by their power and money hungry Churches, it's really just a damn shame.

Evil is SO clever. Abortion, Gay, Lesbian, euthanasia, selfishness, all things that have gone main stream in the media. Evil is smart, cunning, and knows how to work its way into our lives and make us think its okay to do the exact things that God has told us not to.

I'm an atheist and I'm trying to imagine what I would have to change about my life if God unveiled himself as real. Other than going to Church and the blasphemy that being an atheist entails, I can't think of anything. It's not like I'm out there breaking Commandments for breakfast. I'm an honest, friendly, law-abiding citizen. I don't really "benefit" from not believing in God, I just don't believe in him.

Evil is clever? Or the Church is clever in maintaining its power by calling out evils? Remember the Salem Witch Trials? Whether or not there were any witches there there sure was evil being done in the name of good.

Gays and lesbians are living evil lives. Lives that God has destroyed in the bible in the old testament. It will never be an accepted way of life to the Lord no matter how main stream the gay and lesbian way of life is here on earth.

The Church is just a scam that preys on human weakness like guilt and fear of death. Marriage is big business for the Church and they want a monopoly on it – they will pull out all the stops telling their congregations that they and only they can define what marriage is and that God will smite us if we don't do what they say. Will the religious sell out their fellow man and deny him the right to marry who he chooses, deny him the right to his own destiny out of guilt and fear of death? Many will but I think in the long run goodness will win and there are enough true "heroes" who will fight for their fellow man.

It's A SHAME That Children Can't Be Children Anymore These Days?!?! Could someone please explain to me what this matter have to do with comics?!?! If they have had a marriage storyline before, then I could see where they coming from, but they haven't! It's like the editors want to shove down their political views down the public's throats...and that's not fair to the consumers or their children! I couldn't agree with Greentea (who posted earlier) more. Where's the balance in educating our children correctly and not corruptly??? And yes it's corruptly because it's only one-sided! Certainly, everyone should have rights which should includes that everyone has a right to raise their children as they feel it's right. It's all about the well-being of the children–and the Marvel Comics publication already knows that...That's why they created such political matter disguised as public awareness (Oh, give me a break!!!!)

How about all the children that have been hearing years and years of dogma in sermons in Church since they were old enough to go there? I think your real issue is not that children may be exposed to an opinion on controversial subjects at an early age – it's that they'll be exposed to an opinion other than your own.

The only reason this comic has come to the surface is due to all the political non-sense about gay rights floating around out there now. People will do as they want, regardless of the overall outcome. The more pressure put on a single subject will only fuel it further.

I'm shocked and appalled by companies trying to promote this image of gay being OK. What's next, gay cartoons? A gay Smokey the Bear or what about gay Barbie? If you want to be gay that's your business, and I don't dislike gay people, but please don't display gays in media that my kids might get their hands on. It'll only add to their confusion. They need to learn what that is about on their own time, not by some comic publisher or cartoon pushing the idea on them. For most parents, it's a negative image, in fact it is the opposite of what parents project.

I'm shocked and appalled by companies trying to promote this image of straight being OK. What's next, straight rainbows? A straight Ellen Degeneres or what about a straight GI Joe? If you want to be straight that's your business, and I don't dislike straight people, but please don't display straights in media that my kids might get their hands on. It'll only add to their confusion. They need to learn what that is about on their own time, not by some comic publisher or cartoon pushing the idea on them. For most parents, it's a negative image, in fact it is the opposite of what parents project.

        May 29, 2012 at 1:09 am |
    • Phil

What makes gay not okay? The fact that it creeps you out? Cartoons have been kinda gay for a while. Bugs Bunny is a ramapant transvesite. Ren and Stimpy shared a bed in 1991. I think Yogi and Boo-boo shared a bed way before that. And are you saying that a gay Smokey the Bear woudn't be able to raise awareness of forest fires as well as his straight counterpart? And are you denying that the idea of a gay Barbie is at least kinda hot? I'm happy to hear that you've given the rest of the world permission to be gay and you think gays are swell, but if you're worried about your kids getting your hands on gay friendly media, you should be working harder to instill your values on your children to the point where a comic book won't affect their opinions. And are you sure your kids are confused? As a parent in this era, you'd better be prepared for your kid to be exposed to this stuff, because it's happening in the world around them whether it's printed in a comic or not. And just because you are "a" parent, it's presumptuous to assume that you speak for all parents, or even the majority of parents.

  19. Scott Allen

This is pretty much CYA for Marvel. Notice one of the men is of color as well. If they don't get on board with someone gay, even a "who cares" hero, then they get bad press. If they make an "A-Lister" gay, then some people will stop buying the comics, because if your favorite hero, that you want to be turns out to be gay, and you're not, then you will likely lose any interest in that hero and not buy that comic anymore. Comics are about money. Individual writers will try and make their statements in the stories, but the companies (Marvel and DC at least) are in it for the money and not for anything else.

    May 27, 2012 at 10:51 pm |
    • Phil

Scott, it seems like you are one of the few people on this forum that sees this for what it really is – a money making scheme. I agree with you that if an A-lister came out as gay, there may be some short-term backlash from the straight readers. But I don't think this was a CYA move. Most comic readers are straight males who probably don't care about gay rights. What would Marvel have to lose if there was no gay wedding? And what does race have to do with anything? I'm in an interracial relationship, and I don't feel as though we're pushing any boundaries that weren't eliminated in the 60's.

      May 27, 2012 at 5:45 pm |

It's highly unlikely that Satan exists. If he did exist, I'm guessing that he'd be more concerned with perpetuating the true sources of man's downfall. Wars, hunger, pollution, hatred, that kind of thing. I doubt he'd be concerned with the contents of a comic book.

I just think it was just a logical extension of the stories they've been telling. A few years ago the X-Men moved to/found haven in San Francisco where they were accepted as different and they've been subtly paralleling the mutant rights/gay rights movements for some time now.

It seems that everyone's got to get on board with Obama. Marvel just wants to cover this gay issue with an irrelevant character so they can get it out of the way and move along. Every major entertainment industry has to go along to get along otherwise they are labeled as being hatemongers and bigots.

      May 26, 2012 at 10:18 pm |
      • Troy

Then who's respect are they after? Marvel knows it's all a joke, but like Tom says, they are merely going along to get along. They are forced to address this gay issue at some point like it was an albatross, whether they like it or not. It's better just to sacrifice some lesser know slob character(Northstar?) and be done with it. Everyone, including Marvel, has to pretend that they are on board just to shut people up

        May 26, 2012 at 10:44 pm |
      • Phil

They aren't after anyone's respect. They're after everyone's money. As for them being pressured into it, I don't think the majority of their paying customers were beating down Marvel's doors demanding a gay marriage. This is a ploy to get new readers on board. They'll alienate some of their regular customers, but comic fans will get over it and start buying the books in a few weeks.

Exactly. This foolishness & hostility towards people who oppose this lifestyle would stop if we boycotted companies and the media who infringed on our rights to disagree by attempting to force there opinion & silence our voice.

      May 27, 2012 at 11:36 am |
      • Phil

That might work, but the vast majority of people wouldn't be willing to do that. In this example, a boycotter would miss out on the summer's biggest movie, have to explain to their kids why they refuse to buy them any Disney crap, not watch any shows on ABC, and get their highlights from somewhere besides Sports Center. In other words, more than most consumers are willing to do.

Why would they do such a thing? To stay ahead of the game so that they don't have to be bothered with addressing "The Gay Question" later. This way, Marvel is instead hailed as being "Brave", "Bold"', "Revolutionary", "Groundbreaking", and other such nonsense and drivel.

      May 26, 2012 at 10:52 pm |

As a supporter of civil rights, I think it's kinda cool that Marvel is bold enough to make this move. As a long-time X-men fan, I'd rather see a throwdown with Magneto or Apocalypse than a sappy wedding story. Still, I can't imagine that all the characters are gonna be cool with a gay wedding. It might be interesting to see the discenting opinions. I'm pretty sure that any characters that don't support the idea will be much more eloquent than the haters on this board. Seriously, most X-men readers are at least 15 years old. Old enough to look at a controversial situation in a comic and form their own opinions on it. If it really makes you that uncomfortable, vote with your wallet and don't buy any Marvel products. Life will go on.

    May 26, 2012 at 5:39 pm |
    • Troy

You call this move bold? It is merely status quo nowadays to introduce such things. In this day and age it is virtually risk free for Marvel to promote such nonsense. Even Obama is doing it

      May 26, 2012 at 9:40 pm |
    • Phil

Sure I call it bold. The majority of comic readers are straight men. A lot of straight guys get creeped out by gay marriage. They're risking alienating a good portion of their fan base. It could also cause a lot of parents to forbid kids to read Marvel comics. This could cost them a lot of cash. On the other hand, it's got a lot of people talking. They could just as easily make a bunch of money.

      May 26, 2012 at 10:30 pm |
      • Troy

So in other words, it's a no risk move. Everyone knows very few people are going to boycott Mavel over this so it wasn't much of a gamble on Marvel's part. Everyone just chalks it up to being "the sign of the times", which has further been enforced by Obama's spineless endorsement. Sadly, this corruptive act of desensitizing the masses is slowly working.

        May 26, 2012 at 11:04 pm |
      • Phil

No. In other words, it WAS a risky move. Neither you, I, nor anyone else can predict what kind of effect this will have on Marvel's sales in the short term. As for the rest of your post, if you remove the words "spineless", "sadly", and "corruptive", you and I are in total agreement.

        May 27, 2012 at 5:18 am |

A lot of grown men that read comics are creepy themselves...

You won't hear me refute that arguement, Paul.

        May 27, 2012 at 3:31 pm |
      • John

I agree it's a bold move, if only because there are so many bigots out there (as evidenced here). Note that DC (in announcing that one of there long-time ambiguous characters would come out as gay) was not very bold – in that coming out as gay is so 15 years ago. And in fact, 15 years ago was when Northstar came out as gay. The controversial issue today is gay marriage – and so it's bold to take a stand on that, which Marvel is doing. DC is afraid to do that.

  35. Byron

Weren't Beast and Colossus gay at one point (or maybe they still are – – hard to tell with all the iterations and authors)? I think Marvel made the right move by having Northstar come out and now get married because this is what X-Men are all about.

    May 26, 2012 at 1:56 pm |
    • Fuyuko

I seem to recall Colossus. But not sure about Beast. Its been a while since I read the New Mutants/X-Men.

      May 26, 2012 at 4:56 pm |
    • Phil

The Beast just told reporters he was gay to cause a stir. Colossus wasn't gay, he was scromping Kitty Pride.

      May 26, 2012 at 5:42 pm |
    • Dave

They chose Northstar to be gay because he is an inconsequential character that no one is even aware of. It's not like Marvel would degrade one of their frontline superheroes in this way.

      May 26, 2012 at 8:04 pm |
      • Byron

I have to agree with you that Marvel kind of copped out by choosing a 4th stringer character no one has ever heard of – – if they really wanted to make a statement they would've picked a major character that everyone knows. Rumor is that DC has plans to reveal one of their major characters is gay. I doubt that it will be one of the Big Three.

        May 26, 2012 at 11:39 pm |
      • Fuyuko

Northstar has been gay for a while since the 90's. I'll give you that yes he is a second stringer, though.

Should we ban all of the minority characters too? After all, we don't want to "offend" anyone. It would be wrong to accommodate the bigots and not the racists too.

you are right. it is sad. so many fear based comments including my own....everyone is afraid – and does not know what to do....this blog would be a great study for someone. the truth for me is that I have truly appreciated and loved many of the gay people that have been around my life...for the people they are...just like anyone else. Did they want to come to church with me – no....Did I want to hang out full time with them – no. People are amazing....just cannot believe what some have overcome in their lives – me included. But here it is – I am afraid in the politcal arena. I could be at a dinner party with all kinds of people having the best time, don't give a rip. The next day we could all be protesting on opposite sides of the fence. The truth is – this is not personal.......but there are future laws/actions if you wiill – that will divide us – not bring us together .Don't know how this will unravel.....but to the gay community I want you to know....we don't hate you – we just need the freedom to not agree

      May 26, 2012 at 1:32 am |

        May 26, 2012 at 3:40 pm |
      • Phil

You already have the freedom not to agree. What you don't have is the right to disagree without people jumping all over your arguement.

        May 26, 2012 at 6:11 pm |
      • Tami

Thanks Phil that was enlightening!! They are trying to have the bible declared hate literature and make it illegal for a church to choose not to marry a gay couple.....read your gay newsletters.....oh and lets not forget removing the age of consent!! The problem with alot of the liberalists on this page – is you do not have a cotton pickin idea what is going on with the gay combat squad politically.....it would really help if ya'll would do some homework

        May 27, 2012 at 3:04 am |
      • Phil

I'm glad that you found it enlightening, Tami. And you are correct. I don't know all the goals of gay activists. If what you're saying is true and they are doing what you say, then there are three points that I disagree with them on.

        May 27, 2012 at 4:59 am |
    • Fuyuko

The posts here took me by surprise. I honestly didn't consider a gay marriage between two characters that big of a deal. Comics have been having gay characters for quite some time.

Fuyuko – Do you have any children?? You do not understand our world nor do we understand yours. THis blog is for everyones reaction to this comic – not a gay comic swap. This is not personally about you.....or meant to hurt you – but you guys do not see how you are infringing your lifestyle on our children. Would it be ok if I distributed comics to all of the schools showing the twelve diciples teaching on why marriage is only for a man and a woman?? Have you ever seen someone get in between a bear and her young?? I do not believe our children should have to digest this – when the adults cannot even come to any type of agreement.....how confusing. We get this and much more crammed down our throats and if we say anything we are bullying??? "Ok Rosie O Donnell give your children for a few hours and I want to talk with them about Jesus – ok – then i want to introduce them to some new comics....now Rosie don't interfere or I will report you for bullying!!" Only in America!!!!!

Greentea why can't anyone get this point, it's been said so many ways, why don't people get it? Can we not be diverse and get along?

      May 26, 2012 at 2:47 am |
      • Tom

Not when it is this vile and diverse. This does not even qualify as a lifestyle

        May 26, 2012 at 8:23 pm |
    • Mojojuju

Can you not see that nobody is forcing this on your children? This is not taught in schools. It's purchased at a comic book store. If you don't want your children reading it because it goes against your beliefs, then don't buy it for them.

(Even if they did see it at a friend's house it wouldn't turn them gay, sheesh. They might just come home and ask you about it, at which point you can have a talk with them about your family's beliefs.)

      May 26, 2012 at 2:55 pm |

Are you saying that there is no such thing as religious comics? Because I can assure you, they exist. No one is forcing your kids to read these things. As parents, you can forbid it and see where that gets you.

Greentea, I'm simply a fan of Northstar .. I'm not gay. I like the character, and have since he was introduced many years back. He is an interesting character and a strong advocate for rights, aids awareness and mental health concerns. I'm not sure what you expect here, since the article is about gay character getting married except discussion of gay characters in comics.

      May 26, 2012 at 4:54 pm |
      • Tom

Northstar is an expendable and little known "so called" Superhero. They chose him to be gay because they knew it would only upset about 3 of his 5 total fans. Let me guess, you must be one of those five fans who approve of him.

"Grossed out"? There are those who feel the same way when they see a person of color with a white person. You have every right to be "grossed out", but do not have the right to force your minority beliefs on others.

  44. Champloo

The funniest thing about all the equal rights/gay rights/gay marriage debate and media exposure is that this wasn't as big of an issue for the GLBT community UNTIL the religious right started lobbying to change state and federal law to prevent what they think of as an abomination. It is not just the 'gays' that are pushing their agenda but also the right wingers that are pushing their anti-gay agenda. Both sides are causing the media frenzy.

In any case, I don't understand how religion plays into this...separation of state, etc. Equal rights means just that: everyone should have equal rights as long as they don't infringe on others' liberties (and just b/c some people don't 'like' what others are doing in their personal lives, its not infringing on their liberties). I hardly think that two consenting adults (GLBT) wanting the same rights and protections as two other consenting adults (non-GLBT) should be an issue in today's society.

    May 25, 2012 at 4:33 pm |
    • Supersmart

Is it an equal rights to put this in a comic book for kids? Wouldn't that be called dirty fighting if it were a boxing match? If it all just stopped at a tax break, it might be different, but it's more than that.

      May 25, 2012 at 6:08 pm |
      • Champloo

Yes, it is the right of the writers to follow the story line they desire. As it is the right of those who disagree, to say they do not like it (or that gays are freaks, vile, and many other unkind things others have posted here).

Dirty fighting? This comic book issue is doing what many other past issues have done...mirroring societal issues occurring in current events. I suppose if the writers wanted to be more accurate, they could have included anti-gay activists in the drawings telling the happy couple how disgusting they are and that they are going to hell.

Many comic book readers are not kids. The average age of comic book readers in now mid to late teens. By that age most teens have already had exposure to the gay marriage issue.

In addition, parents that disagree with the gay rights movement have every right to forbid their kids from reading things that they deem inappropriate. Just as they have every right to teach their children their beliefs, however antiquated others find them.

Lastly, some in the GLBT community wouldn't care as much about the word 'marriage' if they had the same governmental rights and protections. It's been a word used by both sides of the argument to incite the other.

Gay Agenda is your Westboro Baptist way of saying that we're all conspiring to persecute you and your religions. Art reflects life...or didn't some of you realize that? The exception would be in a facist society, where books are burned, and the only art that is allowed is that which conforms to the tastes of the bigoted leaders. In such a facist society, harm to others, suppression, repression, villification, and torture or routine, and life really doesn't matter. I hope America remains a fortress for Democracy, and that Marvel Comics will thrive, action heroes and all.

So touching...and artsy!! They have the freedom to print it – we have the freedom to ban it! The beauty of America!! The big question will be whether we get to keep the bible – won't it – will you fight for freedom then?

      May 25, 2012 at 12:56 pm |

tom: you do not have a right to ban it.

Oh no, the marriage of Reed and Susan Richards will be forever diminished now that gay superheros can marry.

Nice publicity move for Marvel, and hopefully they will keep the story line active. Great opportunity to add further depth to the characters.

Disclaimer: I haven't read comics regularly in a long time so if the Richards are no longer married, or are dead or something I apologize for not knowing.

i am a christian, but im not going to force my religious views on others or beat the bible into someone.. but i will say this..
woe to those who call good evil

and woe to those who call evil.......good.

all the terminator movies have one singular message "we become the victims of our human weaknesses"

As gay groups continue to try and change laws....and they will – the question now is who is beating who? You get no sympathy here

        May 25, 2012 at 1:00 pm |
      • Jon

It's not about changing laws, Tree Man. It's ensuring everyone has equal protection under the law. Actually, it's the anti-gay marriage groups who want to change the laws.

        May 25, 2012 at 2:33 pm |
      • Supersmart

Beat over the head??? If I want a christian comic I go to a christian book store and buy one. The gay agenda gets slapped all over the place and put in front of children. Does anyone RESPECT that children have parents who are allowed to teach them what their family believes??? There is the endless attempts in court to put the gay agenda in the school system, school is for math and science, it should be a place where diversity is at the highest level because they are kids and the objective is learning. That's the trouble with these arguments is that there is people who actually know what's going on and too many that do not.

        May 25, 2012 at 4:32 pm |
      • Tom

Good night Jon Boy!! blah blah blah.......

    • Umadbro

      It's funny you say
"As gay groups continue to try and change laws....and they will – the question now is who is beating who? You get no sympathy here"... It's still you who's beating people over the head. All they're trying to do is get the same right as you do. You hit them over the head with your bible quotes that suit your own argument, forget other verses and forget what the whole religion is about. All they want is the same right you have legally. If you don't like that? that's fine, you don't have to beat them over the head with your bible quotes and claiming that just because you don't like it is a "sin" while your sins are just as bad according to your book.. Just come out and say you're a bigot and stop hiding behind your version of Christianity already.

i dont understand ... as far as i know, none of the other x-men got married. and if they did it wasnt the big front-page story they are making this out to be. none of this is within the scope of comic books, and Liu brought up NY's gay marriage law ... so tell me again how it isnt a political statement? stick to comics, guys, and stop dilluting the integrity of your craft.

Don't even bother trying to rationalize it all. This is just Gay CNN trying to push their loose and liberal freakshow agenda

Yes – the worst part of this is watching the freakshow....try to fool all of us – that all they want is equal rights....thats the smoke and mirrors part of the show. This agenda has much more that they are after....and we KNOW all about it

Mouthy gash? Ha Ha. Case in point. It sounds like your the low class idiot who is rather mouthy. An unrefined idiot. The comment about Jesus was pretty disgusting also, whether one follows him or not. And judging by the comments here on this board that others have responded to you on you seem to be losing all of your arguments. You're just too easy kid

        May 25, 2012 at 1:17 pm |

My children are beautiful, gayloving Sam. That is certainly more than can be said for youself and the rupulsive freakshows who cannot produce and must rely on straight people to pick up the slack for them. Now try to defend that.

        May 25, 2012 at 12:00 pm |
      • Sam Stone

Seems like an awful lot of conjecture there, Todd. Oh well, feel as you will. Bigotry dies hard, but it does die.

Also, Todd....how are straight people "picking up the slack" for gays?

        May 25, 2012 at 12:34 pm |
    • Todd

Conjecture? Please. So in other words, you still cannot adequately defend them. Figures. If it has to be explained to you how straight people must pick up the slack by reproducing in place of those who cannot reproduce, then you are too stupid to carry a conversation with.

      May 25, 2012 at 12:43 pm |
      • Sam Stone

I have no need to defend how my life is and how it relates to your guesses. I am straight. If you don't believe it, fair enough. Now, go fvck yourself

        May 25, 2012 at 1:16 pm |

  59. David

Just completely disgusting. No matter how they try to disguise it those two men end up looking like pathetic freaks. To make it even more awkward it's a nasty interracial farce to boot. Could it get any more nauseating or creepy? And then to have all those superheroes standing around pretending to be enjoying or approving of this entire hideous spectacle is laughable at best. Except it's not even funny.

That's always the first lame excuse you gay apologists come up with. Always trying to turn it around that everyone who objects must also be gay. It is an ineffectual and weak reponse on your part that fools absolutely no one. It is a perfectly natural reaction for both men and women to be disgusted by such unnatural and vile things. Mabey it is you who are the one who is Gay and is sensitive to such criticism? HMMM?

This is a sad day in America. Kids already have so much to deal with – now they have to figure whether its ok for superheroes to get married. ......The bulk of America is being forced to say this is ok – and it is not for millions....if we say it out loud – then we are called bigots and hateful. Some of the hateful comments made on this blog against Christians has been very interesting for me to see.....if you lift the lid and really look inside you will see hate all over the place, on all sides....not just one. The politicians are going to get very frustrated on this one.....because there is no way we will ever agree on this issue – never. If it is pushed – people that normally would get along – are going to be forced to take a side.....and everyone will get hurt

    May 25, 2012 at 2:12 am |
    • sublime

You are bang on Archie. You cannot force two people groups to agree – most christians do not hate anyone....but they disagree with this lifestyle in principle....now you have the politicians, Hollywood and the gay and lesbian community using the media and movies to influence change.....and then change laws....pretty soon society if being forced – and it is not true change. The people of California voted out gay marriage.....do you think anyone honored the vote of the people?? No way.....North Carolina voted it out......now what? The people have spoken.....

      • Whatever

They are talking about equality and understanding. You probably have no idea, because you cant see beyond your own shallow life and I'm sure you have never had to deal with any real issue in your lifetime. This should not have anything to do with religion. Just equality in a country where we, all MEN have rights of life and liberty. Like it or not, gay people are going thru a time of civil rights to gain what they deserve- just as black people, latino's, women, and religions have gone thru in our country to gain equality. You can think its creepy or whatever, its not going away. The rights of two consenting adults do do as they wish with thier lives in our country should not be put up to vote. We are a country founded on freedom, as real americans we should embrace this as another facet of our society that makes this such a great place. Our diversity makes us strong. If you are uncomfortable, that is your problem and you need to deal with that. Welcome to a world where not everyone is like you, and jkust because you don't like it or understand it, that should not infringe on their rights to be equal to you.

        May 25, 2012 at 10:24 am |

Sublime if we left things to "the people" -slavery would still exist, women would not be able to vote or own property, children would still be used for heavy labor, Jews would be exterminated...get the point? EVOLVE

      • Mitch

Stone. What difference would that make? It ridiculous, gay superhero and getting married. This crap is getting like some tv shows. Can't they find things for superheros to do? They have to resort to gay weddings?

        May 25, 2012 at 7:35 am |
      • Sam Stone

Mitch: Sure, it's ridiculous. Is it any more ridiculous than comic books in general? I find it annoying that people are using this ridiculousness to post their vitriol against gays. I am a straight, middle aged male. But, I know several gay folks. They seem like decent folk to me. Some of the males seem a bit of a stereotype. So what? Since I know some folk who are gay and decent, I feel obligated to stand up when bigots spew their bigotry. Just as I do when bigots spew crap about black people (I am white). I feel to do otherwise would be tacit approval of the bigotry

        May 25, 2012 at 8:11 am |
      • David

You gay apologists are just as bad as the gays themselves. It is perfectly acceptable for both men and women alike to look down on such vile and unnatural people. They are a freakshow community and nothing you say in their defense will ever change this. People are perfectly within their right to object and sneer at such loathsome creatures, if you want to call them that.

        May 25, 2012 at 9:54 am |

David: You are perfectly within your rights to be as bigoted as you wish. And we are within ours to call you out on it.

The very fact that the gay agenda has shown up in a comic for children is shows the intent of this group. The gay group has an extreme issue with DIVERSITY. It is not okay for people to not agree with their lifestyle choice, everyone including children must believe it's okay. If the world is not allowed to have DIVERSITY.....well we should all just join the Taliban now and get it over with. Another group with huge issues with DIVERSITY!!!! Believers should be allowed to say I don't agree with this lifestyle, Gays should be allowed to say I don't like God. We all have to live here and we will never, never all agree, BUT we can agree on many issues that benefit all, they are not hard to find. Hungary kids fed, homeless sheltered, etc. etc. DIVERSITY, DIVERSITY!!!!!!

willy @ 3:42 p.m. You made a good point. You guys got recruited and indoctrinated by experienced men who knew how to mix fun and s@ex in an atmosphere of acceptance. You got caught by your curiosity. Parents who had strong direction and understanding of their sons vulnerability used to make sure their boys were "started" by a kind, sweet older "family friend" who gave them confidence and an absolute appreciation of what a girl was about. Then they really wanted to find one for themseves. And life went along smoothy. And their sons learned the same way. What's better is one boy, one girl, privicy and happiness when they can support a child.

willy @ 3:42 p.m. It still happens among big money. What's better is one boy, one girl, privicy and happiness when they can support a child.
