'Atomic Robo' for the win

Hello again, fellow comic readers!

A butt-kicking robot ventures all over the world, fighting evil scientists, dinosaurs and other robots in this week’s pick, Red 5 Comics' “Atomic Robo Presents Real Science Adventures #1.”

This new anthology presents several smaller self-contained stories and strips about the mechanical hero Atomic Robo. It's written by Brian Clevinger and featuring art from John Broglia, Ryan Colby, Yuko Ota, Chris Houghton, Joshua Ross and Scott Wegener.

The last story in "Real Science Adventures #1" is actually part of a larger story that is also in "Atomic Robo Volume 1 #3" but has themes from most of the other Atomic Robos books, like "Atomic Robo and the Dogs of War," "Atomic Robo and the Shadow From Beyond Time," and "Atomic Robo and the Deadly Art of Science."

I first heard of the book when Evil Hat Produtions announced plans for a table top RPG based on the comic. As a fan of their Dresden Files RPG, I went looking for “Atomic Robo” comic books to see what it was all about. I fell in love!

Also a huge fan of the books, Daniel Dean from Titan Games and Comics in Smyrna, Georgia, said, “I am not the kind of comic fan who sits around hoping and waiting for some TV or film adaptation of their favorite books, but I would tune into an ‘Atomic Robo’ series tomorrow.”

If you’re late to the “Atomic Robo” party, you don't really have to steep yourself in that much background, which is a great aspect about the comic books and hopefully, by extension, the franchise's other platforms.“Still, it can be tricky to keep track of ‘Atomic Robo,’ which exists more as a series of mini-series, than as a more traditional ongoing series,” Dean said.

If that sounds like a mouthful, all you need to keep in mind is that something awesome and hilarious happens on just about every page of this thing. We've got kung-fu legends, explosions, and even a bit of tenderness.

“I've met people mystified at my affection for this character, but it's rooted in the same appreciation I have for the sci-fi films of Ray Harryhausen, ‘Johnny Quest,’ the ‘Mars Attacks!’ trading cards, and other, more pulp-inspired adventures,” Dean said.

So, until next week, go forth and read, my people. And the reading will be good!

Is there a comic out there that you really love? Let us know in the comments. We’re always looking for tips on good comics!

Here are some of the comics scheduled to hit the shelves on March 28, 2012. Your local retailer will probably have these and others, so make sure to check with them for more details.

I would like to get across my affection for your kind-heartedness supporting individuals who require help with this one idea. Your special commitment to getting the solution all-around had been unbelievably insightful and have really encouraged those much like me to attain their goals. Your own insightful advice means this much to me and extremely more to my office workers. Warm regards; from all of us.

Atomic Robo is the only ongoing comic I still read. It's a great pulp adventure book, full of wit and imagination. Good to see it getting the attention it deserves! :)

I interviewed Scott Wegener for the first issue of my magazine "The Valley" about five years ago, when he was just starting "Atomic Robo" and still living in Wilton. Nice guy. Good to see he's getting ahead.

I had a chance to meet the Red 5 guys at the 2008 Comic Con when atomic Robo was just starting to get traction. The guy were really great and at the time had a deal that something like $30 for every single one of their current peices of work. So I went for that deal and read everything that night. Great writers, great artists. I just don't have the time at the moment to get back in to Atomic Robo, but I sure do miss it!

I voted Other because it's more of a combo of some of the other ansrews, but usually while in the hospital. Usually I only am able to get comics on the way to one of my doctor appointments (as the closest comic shop is in the same town as most of the specialists I have to see). I also have to get a procedure done a couple times a year at least, so I'm always stocked up with some comics to read while I'm waiting and some to read while I'm coming off the anesthesia. It's kinda fitting, to be honest, as I learned to read while I was going through chemo as a kid and my older brother used comics as a means to get me to WANT to learn to read.
