New Comic Wednesday: February 8, 2012

Hello again, fellow comic readers!

This week's pick is all about a shape-shifting, magical talking dog named Jake from the Land of Ooo - that's right, it's Boom! Studio's "Adventure Time #1."

"Adventure Time" is best known as an animated series shown on the Cartoon Network (which, like CNN, is owned by Time Warner). It follows Jake, the above-mentioned talking dog, and his 13-year-old human friend, Finn.

It's developed a cult following of both teens and adults, with its tales of their adventures together in a strange, surreal and sometimes dark world.  The shows are often a bizarre fantasy romp through everything producer Pendleton Ward and his fellow writers and animators ever loved about dragons, wizards, vampires, minotaurs, "Dungeons and Dragons," video games, and yes, even comics. No doubt you've seen kids walking around with those yellow laplander hats - the face on those hats is Jake.

If you're part of that Jake and Finn army, you’ll love this new title from Boom Studios. But even without a compendium of knowledge about this franchise, this is an enjoyable book.

“Adventure Time” (the comic book) is written by webcomic artist Ryan North, who has been doing dynamite comedy every weekday for years with “Dinosaur Comics.”

The strip, which launched in February 2003, is a semiminimalist meditation on philosophical paradoxes, etymological curiosities, and Batman - all from the perspective of a core cast of talking dinosaurs.

Throw in a rotating roster of guest stars that includes God, Satan, and the creepy raccoons and cephalopods who live next door, and you get the picture.

If you’re a comics fan who typically ignores Web titles, you’re robbing yourself, and “Dinosaur Comics” is one you should check out ASAP.

Our friend Daniel Dean from Titan Games and Comics in Smyrna, Georgia, is an “Adventure Time" fan. He calls it the best show on Cartoon Network.

“I'd say what makes it great is the same thing that makes ‘Venture Bros.’ or ‘Avatar’ great: the personal touch at every level,” he said.

Dean says he’s both a comics and animation fan. But “Adventure Time” making the leap to his first love is - well - let’s just say he sounds excited.

“One of my favorite shows comes to one of my favorite mediums - courtesy of one of my favorite companies and one of my favorite webcomics authors,” he said. “If I can get some tacos later this is going to be an Ice Cube-level good day.”

Boom! Studios is a young company that seems to be doing a lot right. The brand was launched with some excellent licensed comics like “Muppet Show” and “Incredibles.” It managed to simultaneously secure a newsstand distribution deal (a big deal for a smaller publisher) and build a core of creator-owned titles and reprints. Its current all-ages imprint, Kaboom!, has been a good source for a wide variety of all-ages titles.

So that leaves us with a great publisher, a fabulous webcomic author slinging jokes and weirdness, and a magical land where a shut-in wizard with 60 pet penguins video-blogs his impression of teenage indie rock vampires. What’s not to like?

There are some great books coming out Wednesday, but I'm probably most excited about this one.

So, until next week, go forth and read, my people. And the reading will be good!

Is there a comic out there that you really love? Let us know in the comments. We’re always looking for tips on good comics!

Here are some of the comics scheduled to hit the shelves on February 8, 2012. Your local retailer will probably have these and others, so make sure to check with them for more details.

I don't usually like to post "scenes," but George Takei as Ricardo giving the lumpy space princess the Friendship massage ( because it is consenual ) was one of the few things I have laughed at on tv in a long time.

I prefer Regular Show. It's just as trippy but it's actually funny. Adventure Time is just ... weird. JMO.

As mom to 9 and 5 y.o. boys, I'd say the demographic of Adventure Time extends well beyond adults and teens. Adventure Time and Regular Show, also on Cartoon Network, are definitely cartoons that Gen X parents and their kids can enjoy together. While I tend to prefer Regular Show, I do love Finn and Jake and their female friends like Marcelline the vampire, Lumpy Space Princess, and Lady Rainicorn.

    I am so disappointed.

I thought that CNN was doing a feature on "Adventure Time," the 1960s Pittsburgh-based kids' show hosted by the legendary Paul Shannon on WTAE-TV. It was he who introduced the 3 Stooges to a generation of Tri-state boomers. He hosted the comedies of "Our Gang" ("The Little Rascals"), as well as "Dick Tracy" cartoons, and (later) "Kimba the White Lion." We kids would run home from school and watch him while Mom prepared supper. Paul Shannon, the Stooges, and most of the Rascals are long-gone now, but their memory lives on in the hearts a thousands of aging boomers from the Pittsburgh area.
