New Comic Wednesday: December 21, 2011

Hello again, fellow comic readers!

This week’s book is Marvels "Daredevil #7". This is a great book in what myself and Daniel Dean from Titan Games and Comics in Smyrna, Georgia, think is easily among the best new series to come out in 2011, superhero or otherwise.

Dean said he believes this is the best "Daredevil" run (sequential issues of comic books with the same writer at the helm) in the past decade.  This series started by building a challenging new context for Matt Murdock (also known as the book's titular superhero, Daredevil) and company to live in and is now carrying those contexts to their logical extremes.

Writer Brian Michael Bendis outed Daredevil's secret identity. By the end of Bendis' run with the "Daredevil" title, Murdock was in jail, which was where writer Ed Brubaker picked the book up. Brubaker's run shows Murdock losing much more than his freedom. Some bad decisions, and bad company, on Murdock's part led to his literal possession by a demon. In the wake of the havoc Murdock wreaked while possessed, writer Mark Waid ("Kingdom Come," "Superman: Birthright," "Marvel Comics' Captain America") and an A+ art team pick up the storytelling.

The introductory story of this run saw brilliant interpretations of Murdock's supersense abilities both logically and artistically, as well as Murdock's new status as a professional legal consultant. Waid has also woven major implications about the Marvel Universe and plenty of hot water for Murdock into his story line.

Issue #7 builds on those story lines while starting off with Matt Murdock at a Christmas party. It's an excellent jumping on point, if you haven't leapt aboard already.

Some readers of this comic book believe there is a slight misconception with this series because it is so lighthearted and four-color in tone, as opposed to many recent "Daredevil" comics. Don't buy into that kind of thinking - Daredevil still has all kinds of terrible personal problems with even more terrible implications. But while the series does not ignore those issues, it also does not dwell on them. The last decade of "Daredevil" comics has been more about Murdock lately than Daredevil. The story is more about what it means to be Daredevil rather than a comic about Daredevil taking care of superhero business.

I love both kinds of Daredevil comic, and am happy to see that the new series is straightforward superhero comics at their best.

So, until next week, go forth and read, my people, and the reading will be good!

Daredevil's well worth talking up, but the books I'm really looking forward to are the new Boys: Butcher, Baker, Candlestickmaker – Garth Ennis's continued life story of a major character from his superhero parody The Boys – and Wolverine. I'm surprised I care that much about a Wolverine book, but Jason Aaron's just been knocking it out of the park lately.
