Fandom week in review

Here's a look back at some of the stories that had superfans in the geek world buzzing this week:

The "X-Men: First Class" sequel ("Second Class?") is moving forward. [SuperheroHype]

A "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" sequel is also moving forward, with Andy Serkis on board. [Hollywood Reporter]

And yes, Virginia, there are two "Independence Day" sequels in the works. [NYMag.com Vulture]

Peter Jackson's latest video blog about "The Hobbit" makes us even more excited to revisit Middle Earth. [YouTube]

Fans' voices can now be a part of "The Dark Knight Rises," says composer Hans Zimmer. [UJAM]

U.S. fans of "The IT Crowd" won't be able to catch the planned final episode on IFC, according to the network.

Sheldon's Lego Death Star on "The Big Bang Theory" blew us away. (No wonder, because it was a lot of work.) [ChuckLorre.com]

"Once Upon a Time" got a full season pickup, two episodes in. [ABC]

"American Horror Story" will return for a second season on FX, the network confirmed.

And it seems that haunted house stories may be the next big thing after zombies, with the release of "The Innkeepers" trailer. [iTunes]

More confirmation that "Tron: Legacy's" Garrett Hedlund is the frontrunner to star in "Akira." [Hollywood Reporter]

Craig Ferguson knew how to do Halloween right, with Neil Gaiman, Amanda Palmer and friends, paying tribute to "Rocky Horror." [EW/CBS]

For Spike's Video Game Awards, the nominees for Game of the Year are: "Batman: Arkham City," "The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim," "The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword," "Portal 2" and "Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception." [Spike TV]

And there was this tragic news, as well: "Cory Smoot, longtime lead guitar player for the band GWAR, has passed at the age of 34." [GWAR.net]

    Skyward Sword looks great, but I love that it's up for Game of the Year when it hasn't even been released yet.
