'The Darth Knight' takes the cosplay world by storm

Hybrid costumes are nothing new in the world of cosplay (zombified versions of popular characters, especially), but one such costume has been flying around the internet in recent days.

Jeremey Adams and his fiancee, Mallie Jane Little of Bellevue, Ohio, designed this costume, "the Darth Knight," posted it on their Facebook, and the rest is history. (Click here for a look at the full costume on CNN iReport.)

We interviewed Adams about this eye-catching mashup of Batman and "Star Wars'" Darth Vader:

CNN Geek Out: What inspired you to create this costume?

Adams: I was at Mid-Ohio Comic-Con in 2007 and ran into a local Ohio artist by the name of Jay Fife. He and his daughter thought up this awesome concept, a Bat-Vader Mashup. I bought a print of the Art because it was so different. I fell in love with the concept and wanted to attempt the costume. In March of 2010 We got a Vader Helmet as a trade so we built the costume around it!

CNN Geek Out: How long did it take to work on the costume?

Adams: The costume took us a little over a month to finish from design to completion.

The suit is latex and was designed and developed by ourselves. The helmet itself took about 12-14 hours to complete as it was a modification job with the addition of the batears taking the longest. We took a ton of liberties on this costume, since there was no other costumes like it.

We used the art as a jump-off point but tried to bring more elements of the 2 costumes together. We both have full time jobs, this is our hobby, these builds have to wait until our regularly scheduled work days are over.

CNN Geek Out: Has the costume been worn publicly?

Adams: We are planning on taking this costume to Mid-Ohio Comic-Con. This will be its first real debut.

CNN Geek Out: Are you personally a fan of these characters?

Adams: Yes! I'm a huge Batman fan and have had many Bat-costumes from an Adam West to the latest "Dark Knight" suit.

Actually, the first costume I can remember having for Halloween was a Ben Cooper Batman. I still own both the Ben Cooper Batman and Darth Vader costumes. As for Vader, who is not a fan of the Dark Lord of the Sith?

CNN Geek Out: Why do you think these two characters together receive such a big response?

Adams: I feel these characters have endured the test of time because anyone can relate to them on some level, there is an element of good and bad to both of them. One's a father and one is a son!

There is also a darkness and mystery to both of these characters even though there is a ton of backstory on both. People love mystery. It also helps that they both from some of the biggest toy, comic and movie franchises of all time.

Jeremy made a dream come true with this and I want to thank him. Erin's idea and My pinup is something I wanted to see brought to life for some time. Beautiful work on this and I cannot wait to see it live at Mid Ohio Con.
For those out there interested, this is not the first costume based on a drawing of a DC/Star Wars mashup. 2009 my friend Savannah premiered Wonder Leia. http://www.cosplay.com/costume/225603/
Now If I could get these two to pose together.
